Hiva Katoa Polynesian Dance Studio, located in La Mesa, California, offers an immersive cultural experience rooted in the seafaring traditions of ancestral navigators. Founded in December 2016 by directors Noa and Jeannie Napoleon, Hiva Katoa is dedicated to empowering the Pacific Islander community and fostering a deep appreciation for heritage through authentic Polynesian dance instruction. Drawing from the rich lineage of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, and Tokelau, the studio provides classes for students of all ages and skill levels. Our esteemed team includes Music Director and Lead Drummer, Tilafaiga Case, alongside dedicated instructors Tiana Manū, Elden Reyes, Chloe Vermilllo, and Madison Mills. They lead a variety of engaging classes such as Mata’i 2, Va’a Iti, Va’a Boys, Fenua, and Manutea, all designed to nurture both individual growth and group performance. Hiva Katoa is proud of its track record of excellence, having trained award-winning soloists and achieved numerous accolades, including Overall Group at Hura Tahiti of Southern California and Kiki Raina Tahiti. We are committed to preserving traditions while innovating choreography and performance, ensuring a vibrant and empowering experience for every student. Classes are structured into two semesters annually with open enrollment in January and June. Girls are more than welcome to take an additional class if the class is the level below theirs for an extra workout. Example- If you're in the Iriatai Class, you can take the Mata'i Class as well.

Feti’a Class

Women ages 14+(or by skill/height). The Feti’a girls class is the most advanced class at Hiva Katoa. These students are familiar with or understand ‘Ori Tahiti terminology and technical skills. Floor work is required. Students in this class are expected to display confidence and stage presence in performances.

Iriatai Class

Women ages 14+ (or by skill/height). Perfect for advanced dancers who are returning to dance after 2 years+ break or unable to complete floor work. The Iriatai Intermediate Class builds on ‘Ori Tahiti terminology, strengthens the basic foundation of Polynesian dance, and introduces technical skills and choreography. Students in this class are expected to display confidence and stage presence in performances.

Mata’i Class

Women ages 13+. The Mata’i Beginner Class introduces ‘Ori Tahiti terminology and strengthens the basic fundamentals of Polynesian dance. This class helps students gain an understanding and appreciation of the Polynesian culture.

Manutea Girls Class

Teens/girls ages 11-13 (or by skill/height). Must have at least 1.5-2 years of experience in Tahitian dance. Tryouts/Class placements required. The Manutea Class is for intermediate/advanced students. We strengthen the fundamentals of Polynesian dance while emphasizing the proper technique and advanced skills of ‘Ori Tahiti.

Fenua Girls Class

Girls ages 6-10 (intermediate/advanced level). Must have at least 1.5-2 years of experience in Tahitian dance. Tryouts/Class placements required. The Fenua Class works on strengthening the fundamentals of Polynesian dance while emphasizing on the proper technique and advanced skills of ‘Ori Tahiti.

Moana girls Class

Girls ages 5-12 (beginner level). No experience is necessary. The Moana Class learns the fundamentals of Polynesian dance and language through movement and song. This class helps students gain an understanding and appreciation of the Polynesian culture.
