About California Academy of Performing Arts

Nestled in Moraga, California, the California Academy of Performing Arts (CAPA), founded in 1981 by Joan Robinson, is a distinguished institution dedicated to professional dance and theatre training. CAPA nurtures talent from age three through high school, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed for progressive learning. The academy's esteemed faculty, comprised of accomplished Bay Area professionals with extensive experience in world-class performances and choreography, guides students through a rich array of disciplines including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Musical Theater. For its youngest dancers, the Primary Division (ages 3-6) provides a joyful introduction through creative movement, classical ballet, and tap. As students advance, CAPA offers specialized ensemble opportunities like the Daisy Ensemble and Sprouts Ensemble, alongside dedicated paths for serious ballet practitioners, including the Aurora Ballet Company for Ballet 3 level students and the Ballet Company. Aspiring performers prepare for key productions such as the December Nutcracker and the annual June Showcase. CAPA fosters a safe, nurturing environment where the process of learning is as valued as artistic achievement, instilling essential life skills like commitment, teamwork, and perseverance. The academy prioritizes consistent class availability, with the 2025-2026 season commencing August 11, 2025. Instructors Joan and Doyle are integral to guiding student progress. CAPA graduates often achieve remarkable success, carrying forward the discipline, creativity, and life lessons learned, forming lifelong friendships within its strong sense of community.
