About Amina School of Belly Dance and Drum

Discover the vibrant world of dance and rhythm at Amina School of Belly Dance and Drum, located in San Francisco, California. Founded on a rich tradition, the studio is driven by Amina Goodyear, also the force behind The Aswan Dancers, Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 1983. Amina Goodyear offers specialized instruction in Belly Dance, exploring its diverse expressions from Egyptian Beledy and Golden Age styles to folkloric traditions. Her teaching, influenced by her mentor Fatma Akef, a dancer with Egyptian circus arts roots, infuses humor, character work, and even "acrobatic prop dancing" into unique "Dance Dramas and Skits" like "The Tale of the Drunken Husband" and "The Tale of the Bashful Bride." The curriculum emphasizes musicality and rhythmic understanding, with a class focused on "Egyptian Dance Inside Out" that delves into cultural context, music, and historical evolution. Drum instruction by Susu covers basic Middle Eastern rhythms and song breakdowns. Catering to all levels, from beginners to advanced, the studio offers in-person and Zoom classes, along with private lessons for honing technique or performance pieces. Amina School of Belly Dance and Drum fosters a welcoming community with performance opportunities, often featuring live music, dedicated to the celebration and preservation of these rich cultural arts.

You will learn the history and hear, see and dance how Egyptian dance has changed through the ages. Back in the day we called it beledy. PLUS we will also also touch on the Golden Age, tarab, folkloric and the baladi taqsim, break down the structure, the movements, the rhythmic and melodic progression and more. In other words, we may do anything Egyptian. I like to teach using the music and rhythm as the main tool - not drill unrelated dance steps. I like to discuss concepts and trends, encourage discussions and often show video examples. This is a small on-going class and I encourage discussions in analyzing whatever - from trends to … I love to take requests on working on specific subjects so class agenda often changes at a moment’s notice. Feel free to join us and try it out. Contact me for a first class free link.
