About Sebastopol Ballet School

Sebastopol Ballet School, located in Sebastopol, California, has been a cornerstone of dance education since its founding in 1991. Originally established by Susan Borgeson, Lois Hartman, and Paula Martens, the school continues its legacy under the direction of Hannah Paddock, a former competitive gymnast and dedicated ballet student. Sebastopol Ballet School offers a comprehensive dance education for students of all ages and levels. Their core curriculum emphasizes foundational techniques in classical Ballet, progressing from foundational levels to advanced training, including pointe work for qualified dancers. Complementing these classical offerings are vibrant Contemporary classes, fostering expressive movement and modern exploration. For those interested in energetic and rhythmic styles, the school features dynamic Hip Hop classes and traditional Tap classes. Specialized programs cater to younger dancers, with Kinder Classes for ages 3-6 and Youth Classes for ages 6 and above. Adult and older teen programs are also available. Class placement in Ballet Level 2+ and Contemporary Level 1+ is based on teacher recommendation, ensuring appropriate guidance. A cherished tradition is their annual production of "The Nutcracker," which showcases student talent and often features alumni and guest artists. The school is committed to a supportive learning environment where the joy of dance is paramount, guiding each dancer through their journey.

Beginning Ballet

6-7 years old. This class is ideal for students in kindergarten or first grade, when they are more skilled at listening and following directions, and have the attention capacity for an hour long class. In this class, students will learn basic ballet technique, poise, concepts, and more advanced positions and steps, with the French names. Students will learn more complex choreography at this level.

Kinder Ballet C

5+ years old. This is a great class for kids who are in kindergarten. Students will build on their technique basics and will be expected to remember simple choreography.

Kinder Ballet B

4+ years old. This is a great class for kids who have already completed Kinder Ballet A, or who are in preschool. The expectations are a little higher than Kinder Ballet A, but the class is still playful and fun, while starting to learn basic technique and ballet concepts.

Kinder Ballet A

3+ years old. This is the perfect class for students who have never been in a structured class before. They will learn to listen and follow along in a fun and stimulating environment. The main focus here is that dance should be fun. Children must be able to participate in class without a parent.

Level 4 and Above

If your child would like to join at Level 4 or above, we will schedule a time to meet and assess their level to make sure they are placed in the right class. These levels include at least one pointe class per week – students must take three ballet classes per week to dance en pointe.

Level 3 A / B

Like Level 2, this is a two year program, and students are encouraged to come 3 days a week, and for 3B it is required. Level 3B includes beginning pointe in the Fall, transitioning to Pointe 1 in the Spring. Students do not have to take class en pointe, but if they do, three ballet classes per week are required.

Level 1

It is preferred that students take Beginning Ballet prior to starting Level 1, as basic ballet fundamentals are needed to thrive in this class.
