Ballet/Pointe

MDA offers classes in both classical and contemporary ballet styles. Ballet defines the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres. The technique of ballet is elaborate and requires many years of training. MDA encourages both recreational and serious dancers to participate in at least one ballet class a week. This is simply because of the degree of difficulty of achieving a high level of technique and need for a dancer’s body and muscles to get used to the movement and endurance, among many other things. A typical ballet class will start at the barre with a series of exercises given to help the dancer gain the strength and technique needed to work in the center floor.

MUSICAL THEATER

Musical theater dance is the study of Broadway dance and dance styles. Young students as well as teens and adults learn choreography from selected musicals, such as “High School Musical”, “Hair Spray”, “Annie”, “Fosse”, and many more. Our focus is on Broadway musicals old and new! Our instructors introduce acting and choreography into dance techniques and styles. The class will begin with a warm up, technique across the floor with some character development activities, and then various choreographies to enhance their character development. Classes include dance, acting and improvisation activities, as well as proper dance technique and performance. These classes are for dancers who like the spotlight, drama, and telling a story through dance. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility, strength, confidence, and performance. As students’ progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

JAZZ

Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop classes are designed to allow the students to let go and are suitable for boys, girls, men and women of all ages and levels. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, it’s diverse, and forever changing! Hip hop uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B, and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers. It encompasses movement that has elements of popping and locking, and breaking, as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style.
