Tap

Tap classes are offered to students of all ages, beginner through advanced as early as 4 years old. Dancers are taught to make frequent use of syncopation. Choreography typically starts on the eighth or first beat count. Another aspect of this type of dancing is improvisation. This can either be done with music and following the beats provided, or without musical accompaniment, otherwise known as a cappella dancing. It is considered one of the most important styles of dance, as it teaches students rhythm and how to hear the beat in the music. It is quite complimentary for students taking other styles of dance, especially ballet. Musicality is necessary to all dance techniques and disciplines.

Modern Free Your Body Movement and Express Yourself!

Modern dance has become an important style that is recognized throughout the dance industry. This expressive style compliments classical ballet technique and training with its equal yet opposite focus on body movements and isolations. The essence of this style is self-expression and emotive movement, as opposed to the rigid structure of classical ballet.

Jazz Tap Combo

Jazz Tap Combo combines early basic techniques of a 45-minute jazz and a 45-minute tap class. The students will learn new terminology and technique every week that will build upon previously taught skills. Jazz dance uses both Ballet and Modern technique; however it gives the freedom of movement and the opportunity to use a wide range of music to create fun and intricate combinations to upbeat and exciting music. This is the class where students can let loose, take their bun down, and have fun while learning all the newest leaps, turns, and relevant combinations. It’s where ballet and modern technique and training combine in the most explosive and exciting way! Instructors get to share their passion for performance and train students how to master athleticism in dance. Having a Jazz Tap Combo at early level dance training jumpstarts dancers to building a strong foundation in the art. It is common for students to stay in Jazz Tap Combo class for a couple of years. This is to ensure that they have mastered the material in to advance to the next level.

We highly recommend that students have past Ballet training or train in Ballet simultaneously in order to optimize their training potential in Jazz. Most of it’s terminology in stems from Ballet vocabulary. We offer classes for students ages 6 through early college.

Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop is a dynamic, rhythmic style of dance. This class focuses on the student’s ability to learn fast paced and intricate choreography, musicality, and isolations in body movement. It is a broad category that continues to evolve. It is important that students receive instruction from well rounded instructors with experience and training in many subgenres of this style. New subgenres are added continually and include: Locking, Krumping, Popping, Breaking, Jerkin’, Freestyle, and more. It’s influence and relevance in the dance and entertainment industry has exploded in the past decade. It has become an important style of dance for students wanting to pursue a future in dance. If you love to have a great time, get a good workout and dance, this is the class for you!

Pointe

Pointe is an extension of Ballet training presented on the tips of the toes, made possible by specialized shoes. There are different varieties of this work, but for the most part they all focus on grace and technique. It is commonly danced only by women. There are different styles and brands of these shoes, also commonly referred to as toe shoes or blocked shoes, and different dancers find that one style or another may fit better. It is important that dancers be properly fit in their shoes. It can take a few attempts before finding the shoe that is right for them. Dancers must have sufficient strength in the feet, ankle, leg, knee, and abdomen, as well as strong technical skills, before beginning pointe work. At SFDC we will not consider a dancer for this next level in training until reaching the minimum age of 12, they have been recommended by their instructor , and have completed at least on year in pre-pointe class. They must also continue attending the required amount and current level of ballet classes.

Contemporary

This style is a combination of the technique and terminology of Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, and Modern and emphasizes freedom in movement and emotion. It has only recently emerged in the mid 20th century and has made an explosive entry into the dance industry! It’s popularity rose so quickly for how it connects the art of emotion in dance between the choreographer and the dancer, and likewise the dancer and the patron watching. The story telling with body language and artistry in expressive feelings make it easier for those watching to understand the message or story being told by the dancer. Contemporary has a strong similarity to both Lyrical and Modern Dance. Most people have a difficult time understanding the differences. This is due in part to expression of the fundamentals of these two styles that when combined give the literal interpretation of a known story or the words of the song being danced to. We refer to this as storytelling. Students will learn to feel an emotional connection to the music and will in turn express the story of the music through their movement, lines and facial expressions.

Ballet

Unlock your true potential with grace and power! Ballet is the foundation to all other dance forms. It requires intense concentration, discipline, and strength to progress properly. We have carefully deigned and implement a rubric that our instructors follow to ensure dancers are progressing effectively within each level. Students typically remain in their levels for a minimum of two years. We initially place students according to grade level; however, the instructor evaluates and determines the appropriate placement for each and every student. Every child’s ability is different and in turn so is their progression. Some students will master skills more quickly than others. We ask that parents and students respect the instructor’s placement as it is in the best interest of the child. Students begin class with barre work which is followed by center and across the floor instruction. They are always learning new terminology and technique, but it is the constant repetition and fine tuning of these that will result in the mastery of the skills. We stress that our instructors focus on the many methods of Ballet. It is important that students know the differences between the most common methods so that they are able to adapt to any teaching style. The most common methods taught include: Vaganova (Russian), Cecchetti (Italian), Balanchine (American School of Ballet), and R.A.D. (The Royal Academy of Dance). We believe that students should be well versed in all of these methods as focusing on one method would limit them as they continue in their dance training. Students expressing an interest in Pointe will be able to begin with permission from the instructor. Students must have the appropriate strength in the feet and ankles. In addition to the 1 hour Pointe class, the students must be enrolled in the minimum of two upper level classes per week.

Acro

Build a strong core and enhance your flexibility with Acro dance classes. This style of dance combines classical dance technique training with floor gymnastics. Dancers will learn to combine the technique and terminology from both skills while expanding on flexibility, core strength, foundational skills, and choreography. It is the recommended class for students wanting to strengthen their core, improve their balance, and learn gymnastic and cirque techniques.

Ballet Tap Combo

Ballet Tap Combo is the best entry level class for the young dancer. It is a beginner level cross style training class offered at our studio. This class combines early ballet and tap technique and terminology. It consists of approximately two combined 45 minute classes of ballet and tap instruction. Students will learn new terminology and technique every week that will build upon previously taught skills from our Preschool Ballet class.

Preschool Ballet

Preschool ballet helps dancers build a strong foundation for dance by starting off right. Preschool Ballet is a 45-minute beginning level class. This class will introduce students to basic dance movement and terms that form the building blocks to dance. Here, beginner dancers learn how to take direction from the teacher while surrounded by other students their age to promote healthy socialization. At the preschool level we structure the class to teach technique in a way that is fun and motivating. Students are always excited to come to class. Why is dance important for preschoolers? They build friendships, skills, and cognitive abilities while enjoying every minute of class. Teachers will often include games, stuffed animal, and other props to keep the tiniest of dancers engaged and eager to learn. By the end of the season, students will demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year while performing onstage in a professional local venue. Just wait and see how brave and confident your little one becomes!
