Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop is a broad collection of urban street dance styles that has become very popular. It seems to have originated from breakdancing (which is usually executed at a lower level or close to the ground) but is danced more upright or at all levels of space. It is an incredibly energetic form of dance which allows and encourages one’s own movement or personality to radiate throughout. Sharon Davis School of Dance offers several hip-hop classes to students in Elementary school through College. Be prepared to sweat in these classes!

Contemporary

The contemporary dance style was developed by dance pioneers in the early 20th century. The type of dance produced by these reformers originated from personal interpretations or inner feelings and not the typical structured steps, as seen in traditional ballet dancing. A contemporary dancer is encouraged to use emotion and mood to perform movements that were atypical compared to traditional dancing. A contemporary dancer at the Sharon Davis School of Dance studios in Tallahassee will be led through many strengthening exercises during a class and taught unique and creative movement based on inner feelings and aesthetic awareness. This genre of dance has become very popular among dancers. Shoes are not required for this class.

Jazz

Jazz is a fun dance style that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. Improvisation is an important element in jazz dance in which a dancer interprets and executes movements in their own way or fashion. The jazz dancer may use bold, dramatic body movements, as well as body isolations and contractions, while incorporating their own expression. This type of dancing is energetic and usually consists of large leaps, various turns, and stylized movement.

Choreography

Choreography is the art of designing dances. A choreographer concentrates on motion and form as they compile movement sequences to create a dance. The dance may be arranged in patterns and will sometimes tell a story and/or demonstrate the kinetic ability or technique of the dancer(s). In a Sharon Davis School of Dance choreography class in our Tallahassee studios, students will learn the elements of dance. The elements of dance are body, action, space, time, and energy. Teachers give students fun and exciting problems that they solve, with guidance, by using the choreographic process.

En Pointe

En pointe is part of classical ballet technique in which the dancer balances and supports all of her body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. Specially designed shoes, called pointe shoes, help support and distribute the dancer’s body weight throughout the foot. Typically, years of formal training and practice are necessary to develop the strength needed for en pointe. A student is required to have permission from an experienced Sharon Davis School of Dance faculty member in order to enroll in our en pointe class. Strength, ballet technique, and appropriate age are major factors needed for enrollment to practice and perform en pointe work. At the Sharon Davis School of Dance studios in Tallahassee, we take pride in offering beginning en pointe classes to advance en pointe classes.

Special Needs

The Sharon Davis School of Dance Special Needs class is 45 minutes comprised of ballet, jazz, and fun movement exploration exercises. Ballet helps with muscle control and agility, while jazz allows for quick movement and upbeat music. Movement varies between parachute play, tumbling, and free dancing with props. This class is designed to provide students with opportunities for artistic expression through movement and to share the love of dance and music with people of all abilities. This class works to adapt choreography as necessary to incorporate all of the students to the best of their ability and allow them to shine. The Sharon Davis School of Dance Special Needs class welcomes any age and any need.

Tap

Tap dancing is an exhilarating and lively style of dance in which the dancer demonstrates various rhythmic patterns and timely beats made when metal taps on the dancer’s shoes touch a hard surface. In Sharon Davis School of Dance tap dancing classes in Tallahassee, we begin by building a tap dance foundation with our students that they can expound upon to continue to grow and create more complex combinations and intricate, clean sounds. Tap dancing is a wonderful and fun way to boost coordination and increase cardiovascular health.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz. It is usually smoother and slightly faster than ballet, but not as fast as jazz. The lyrical dancer is very expressive in her/his movement demonstrating many ranges of emotions such as love, joy, and anger. The movement in lyrical dance is usually seamless, fluid, graceful, and occasionally emphasizes a finishing step or gesture to add more drama and meaning to the dance. At the Sharon Davis School of Dance studios in Tallahassee, we offer lyrical classes for elementary through college-aged students. Faculty members incorporate their strong ballet backgrounds in center and traveling dance combinations, as well as integrate stretching and body conditioning in warm-ups.

Pre-Ballet & Ballet

Ballet is a formalized type of performance dance, which originated in sixteenth-century and seventeenth-century French courts, and was further developed in England, Italy, and Russia as a concert dance form. It has since become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary and is taught in dance schools and studios around the world. Ballet students range in age from toddlers to adults. Students enrolled in a Sharon Davis School of Dance ballet class in Tallahassee will learn classical barre and centre work. Proper body alignment and technique is the focus, as well as the precision and grace of the dance steps. Level appropriate exercises are taught to promote balance and strength, and to fine-tune the dancer’s technique. In a pre-ballet (KinderKapers) class at the Sharon Davis School of Dance studios, ballet is taught in a creative manner to build a strong dance foundation within our students. Throughout the class, they will learn an extensive ballet vocabulary and develop a love for dance and performance.
