About Department of Dance

The Department of Dance, located in Rexburg, Idaho, is dedicated to fostering spiritual, artistic, intellectual, and physical development through a comprehensive dance education. We offer a rich curriculum that explores a wide variety of dance styles, providing students with essential movement techniques, composition, improvisation, and body conditioning. Our studio proudly teaches Modern (Contemporary), Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Clogging, World Dance, Social Dance, and Ballroom Dance, encompassing both International Standard and Latin genres. Performance and choreographic skill development are emphasized through opportunities like the Winter Dance Showcase, which highlights diverse genres such as ballet, jazz, contemporary, swing, tap, ballroom, American folk, hip-hop, and world dance. Students can engage with collegiate dancers, join the Dance Alliance, and explore opportunities through the Dance Society. We offer Bachelor of Arts degrees in Dance, as well as dance minors and dance concentrations, inviting students to study and master the art of movement. Prospective students are encouraged to explore degree and minor options, as well as Dance Concentrations and Dance Clusters. Our esteemed faculty includes Ashley Storm as Department Chair, Eva Walburger as Office Manager, and adjunct and faculty members Wendy Bone, Gary Larsen, Amy De Vera, Kiersten Lewis, Terri Hess, Jennifer Teuscher, Ashley Reed, Rebekah Ryan, Diedre Sakota, Mindy Larsen, Kelsie Carter, Sarah Winiecke, Autumn Hawkes, Megan Smith, Logan Barnes, Quincy Boe, and Clarissa Baker. We offer scholarships such as the Dance Talent Award Scholarship and provide dance teaching opportunities, welcoming students of all majors and academic tracks to audition for performance opportunities and register for technique classes. The Department of Dance challenges students to create artistic endeavors that reflect a global perspective, embodying sound principles and techniques while integrating theoretical knowledge and expressing themselves creatively.

Dance Society

The Dance Society hosts Variety Night each week throughout the semester. Participation in these is an opportunity to prepare for all auditions by experiencing various genres of dance. Students are encouraged to be involved, to learn and to enhance skills through participation.

Collegiate Dancers

Collegiate Dancers is an auditioned dance company that is directed, choreographed, and performed entirely by students. Any student, regardless of major or track, can audition for Collegiate Dancers. Although auditions are available to everyone who maintains a 2.0 GPA, this opportunity is only available in the Fall semester.

The Department of Dance offers courses that teach movement technique, composition, improvisation, and body conditioning through the study of a wide variety of dance. Dance styles taught at BYU-Idaho include: Modern (Contemporary), Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Clogging, World, Social, and Ballroom Dance (International Standard and Latin). This diverse learning structure will furnish students with quality movement and theoretical experiences to lay the foundation for a career in a dance-related field. Through dance, students learn how to become better individuals by living the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and enhancing their roles as creative and artistic individuals. Classroom instruction and out-of-class participation will provide students with all the skills and experience needed to excel as dancers. Talents will be developed and increased as students seek dance that is "virtuous, lovely or of good report or praiseworthy." (Articles of Faith 1:13) Courses emphasize gospel principles, personal integrity, and individual enrichment along with dance instruction. We challenge students to make artistic efforts that reflect a richly complex and diverse global perspective. Students demonstrate embodiment of taught movement practices based on sound principles and techniques; exhibit analytical integration of theoretical principles, processes, and systems; employ individualized methods of creative, interpretative, and organizational means of expression; and illustrate principles of truth through their capacity to integrate, differentiate, and align their identity within the field of dance.
