The School of Ballet Indiana, located in Evansville, Indiana, is a premier dance institution dedicated to nurturing aspiring dancers from their earliest movements through pre-professional training. Originally established as Studio 321 in August 2014 and officially rebranding in June 2018, SBI has become a leading ballet school in the Tri-State area. Our comprehensive curriculum is rooted in classical ballet, offering a progressive learning path designed to build a strong technical foundation. Students begin with Creative Movement & PreBallet classes, progressing through Preparatory Levels 1-4, and advancing to the Pre-Professional program (Levels 5-7) and the Invitational Level of the esteemed Ballet Institute. SBI also enriches its students with Modern and Contemporary dance classes, designed to develop long, lean muscles and enhance flexibility. Our philosophy emphasizes a holistic approach to dance education, fostering a deep love for the art form in a supportive environment. We offer specialized programs like Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), beneficial for dancers of all ages. Our state-of-the-art facilities include multiple large dance rooms with sprung floors and a dedicated dancer's lounge. SBI proudly assembles a select faculty of highly qualified professionals who guide students through a curriculum that artfully blends discipline with enjoyment. We actively encourage dancers to seek extensive experience, education, and performance opportunities. Our students have achieved significant success in prestigious global competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix, Indianapolis City Ballet Dance Competition, and the World Ballet Competition, earning numerous Top 3 and Top 12 placements. During June, students can immerse themselves in technical ballet and contemporary movement, preparing for professional summer intensives. Our "Little Dancer's Camp" (ages 3-6) introduces young children to ballet fundamentals and performance, culminating in a special showcase. Open classes are available throughout July for intermediate to advanced levels. We are committed to safe and effective training, ensuring continuous development for every student.

Contemporary Movement and Choreography

SBI continues to offer technical training during our June session, along with the great opportunity to explore our creative side with contemporary movement and choreography. Pilates Reformer Privates

Book your private with a certified Pilates instructor on our reformer to help improve function strength. All sessions are private and tailored to each dancer. Accepting appointments from ages 12 to adults, members and nonmembers.

Modern and Contemporary Class

Develop long, lean muscles with a modern dance style made to work with Every Body! The modern Horton dance technique blends Afro-Caribbean, Native American, Balinese, and Japanese dance elements to build strength and flexibility in both men and women. Dance to the drumbeats in a fun environment that will get you moving!

PROGRESSING BALLET TECHNIQUE

Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best in classical ballet. At the School of Ballet Indiana, we offer all four levels of Progressing Ballet Technique to enhance our ballet training curriculum. We introduce exercises in our Pre-Ballet classes to dancers at 5 years of age, and our most advanced dancers practice PBT three days a week.

Ballet Competition Coaching

Certain dancers in this program may be chosen to compete in ballet competitions. Elected candidates are coached privately and thoroughly on specific variation(s) selected for that dancer. Students accepted into the program will be receiving 50+ hours (varying with coaching time) per month in addition to their training in SBI’s Pre-Professional evening program.

Ballet

Our most concentrated program designed to educate dedicated, talented and serious artists and maximize their chances of success in preparation for a professional or academic career. The Ballet Institute accepts a small ratio of dancers in order to give intense personal attention and specific instruction in their individual training.

Students also begin to explore contemporary/modern movement to develop versatility and adopt a new perspective of ballet. The goal of the Pre-Professional Level is to prepare the dancer for opportunities beyond graduation.

Ballet

Students expand their ballet vocabulary to include virtuoso steps, focusing on refining technique, developing subtlety and nuance. Students explore individual choices in movement quality, timing, and expression that develop artistry.

Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best in classical ballet.

Level 4

Students attending Level 4, improve flexibility, build speed, and continue to add additional ballet vocabulary, particularly in center and allegro. Students work on more complex patterns and longer combinations. In addition, grand pirouettes are introduced. Pointe work in Level 4 begins at the invitation of the Artistic Director.

Level 3

Students attending Level 3, not only continues to expand ballet vocabulary, but also begin to combine steps through combinations that increase in rhythmic complexity. Students also begin to add batterie to jumps, and focus on coordination of legs and upper body with épaulement. Pre-Pointe is offered in Level 3 which specifically focuses on the strength required for pointe work.

Level 2

Students attending Level 2 continue to expand their ballet vocabulary, along with focusing on building strength in legs and feet. A greater emphasis is placed on developing balance, preparing for turns, and exploring various movement qualities.

Level 1

Students attending Level 1 practice the focus and etiquette required for the study of ballet. Learning fundamental vocabulary and the essential elements of technique, along with building strength through careful repetition of new material each week, are the foundations that every kind of dancer needs to succeed. Dancers who are invited to start Level 1 must be in/or beyond First Grade.

PreBallet ages 5&6

Pre-Ballet Students begin to learn basic ballet fundamentals and build a strong foundation. Concepts, such as posture, coordination, musicality, spatial awareness, class etiquette and classical ballet terminology are addressed at this level. Progressing Ballet Technique is an innovative program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best in classical ballet. PreBallet dancers are introduced to this amazing conditioning program towards the end of class each week.

Primary Division ages 3-4

An introduction to the art of dance in a nurturing environment! This class assists in identifying basic forms of movement through imaginative games, music and patterns using facilitative props. Students practice fluid, graceful movements to develop spatial and pattern awareness, along with self control and following directions.

Little Dancer's Camp Ballet

Bring your little dancer to class this June, as we invite our smallest dancers to a SPECIAL ballet class. Dancers, ages 3-6, will have a wonderful opportunity to learn the art of performance with a show for all of their family and friends at the conclusion of the camp.
