Creative Movers

For our 3-year-old Creative Movers, we welcome new students during our Summer Programs and in the Fall. The dance year runs from September through our annual recitals in May.

Annual Spring Recital

Washington Dance Studio’s annual spring recitals are held at McCain Auditorium on the Kansas State University Campus. This premier venue provides our dancers with a professional performance experience to culminate their dance year with us. Both recitals also feature WDS Senior, Junior, Teen, and Core Companies. Our dancers experience professional performance preparation in McCain with a technical and dress rehearsal leading up to their Recital performance.

Hip Hop

Non-marking white tennis shoes (tread must be clean and free from mud and rocks), form-fitting, movement-friendly clothing that covers knees. Students are expected to attend classes regularly and on time. If schools close because of bad weather or an emergency, the studio will automatically close.

Lyrical

Leotard and footless tights. Lyrical shoes (tan jazz shoes). Students are asked to be polite and courteous to each other and the teachers. Disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. No gum, food, or beverages are allowed in the studio.

Tap

Leotard and tights. Boy shorts, skirts, or skorts are optional. Black tap shoes. Students are expected to attend classes regularly and on time. If schools close because of bad weather or an emergency, the studio will automatically close.

Jazz

Leotard and tights. Boy shorts, skirts, or skorts are optional. Jazz shoes (black 1st-2nd / tan 3rd-12th). Students are asked to be polite and courteous to each other and the teachers. Disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. No gum, food, or beverages are allowed in the studio.

Combo Class (Ballet/Jazz or Ballet/Tap)

Leotard and tights with skirt and/or boy shorts. Ballet & Jazz (black) or Ballet & Tap (black) shoes are required. Students missing two consecutive classes will need to pay for a private lesson to learn missed recital choreography.

Pointe

Solid-color leotard, no shorts, pink convertible tights, and pointe shoes. Hair in a secure bun. Students are expected to attend classes regularly and on time. If schools close because of bad weather or an emergency, the studio will automatically close.

Ballet/Pre-Dance

Pink Ballet shoes purchased from WDS (no drawstring), solid-color leotard, and tights. Skirts are optional. Students are asked to be polite and courteous to each other and the teachers. Disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. No gum, food, or beverages are allowed in the studio.

Creative Movement

Movement-friendly clothing (street clothes or dancewear), bare feet (to enhance exploration of balance), or Ballet shoes purchased from WDS (no drawstrings).

Hip Hop Dance

Hip Hop is a freestyle movement derived from Jazz that develops rhythm, coordination, and self-expression.

Lyrical Class

Lyrical training is a combination of Ballet, Modern, and Jazz elements in a contemporary interpretation that captures the choreographer's vision as the dancer physically and emotionally expresses a connection with the music. Dancers must also be enrolled in Ballet.

Tap Class

Washington Dance Studio's tap classes offer training in technique, choreography, and performance while focusing on rhythmic precision and musicality development.

Combo Class (K - 2 nd )

This class combines the elements of either Ballet and Jazz (1st & 2nd grades) or Ballet and Tap (Kindergarten) class into one. This one-hour class allows dancers to experience and be exposed to two dance genres with an age-appropriate class length and curriculum that includes learning Ballet and Jazz/Tap fundamentals in a fun and active instructional setting. Dancers in this class perform a short Ballet and Jazz/Tap dance in our annual recital.

Jazz Class

Jazz training is available in technique, choreography, and performance including classical, musical theatre, and contemporary styles. Beginning through Advanced.

Pointe Class

An Extension of Ballet Using Pointe Shoes Dancers must be technically and physically strong for a safe and successful experience. Dancers must also be enrolled in Ballet and receive the instructor's permission (dancers are considered when meeting the above criteria).

Ballet Class

The Foundation of All Dance Forms Ballet is essential in developing the complete dancer as it cultivates grace with strength while the dancer discovers control and balance. Washington Dance Studio offers beginning to advanced training based on a combination of Cecchetti, French, and Russian techniques.

Pre-Dance Class for 4-Year-Olds

Pre-Dance exposes children to a combination of pre-ballet technique and motor skill refinement, as well as social and spatial awareness development. It is a 45-minute class thoughtfully designed for the 4-year-old. Pre-dancer must be four by September 1.

Courses

Creative Movement Class for 3-Year-Olds

Creative Movement encourages physical, mental, and social development through exploration of movement (including Ballet basics), rhythm, and their expressive potential. This is a 30-minute, non-performance class carefully created for the 3-year-old. Both ten-week sessions culminate with an informal, interactive performance. Creative movers must be three by September 1 as well as potty-trained. This class is an excellent transition into our Pre-Dance program for 4-year-olds.
