About Ballroom Dance Lessons Louisville KY

Derby City Ballroom Dance Studio, located in Louisville, Kentucky, invites you to discover the joy and benefits of partner dancing. While our name highlights ballroom, our curriculum extends far beyond, encompassing over 20 distinct styles. We specialize in popular social dances, including an energetic selection of Latin dances like Salsa and Bachata, as well as traditional ballroom and Latin styles such as Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Mambo, Bolero, Quickstep, Paso Doble, Samba, and Jive. Students can also explore Country and other forms of Swing. Led by instructors Jani and Viktoria Szukk, we are dedicated to making dance accessible to everyone, with a strong focus on adult beginners. Our welcoming and casual approach helps new dancers of all ages, genders, and backgrounds build confidence as social dancers and prepare for special occasions like weddings. We are proud to have taught thousands of beginner dancers. New students can take advantage of a special introductory offer: two 30-minute private lessons for just $10 each. Salsa Dance Lessons

Salsa is a dance with origins from the Cuban Son (circa 1920) and Afro-Cuban dance (specifically Afro-Cuban Rumba). It is commonly associated with the salsa music style, although it may be danced under other types of music with an 8-count rhythm.

Bolero

A slow Latin dance which originated as one of two forms of Rumba. It still shares many of the same figures, yet differs in its tempo and movement.

Mambo

Originally a combination of Rumba and Swing, the Mambo peaked in its popularity in the 1950s and remains popular today.

Rumba

Often referred to as the "Dance of Love", Rumba is a slow to medium tempo Latin dance characterized by sensual, provocative movements, gestures and Cuban hip motion.

Samba

A street festival dance originating in Brazil which was introduced to the United States in the 1920s. Samba is fun, lively, and upbeat.

Cha Cha

Originally called "triple Mambo" as it evolved from the Mambo. Cha Cha gets its name from its cha-cha-cha sounds that the footwork make, Cha Cha has remained the all time most popular style of Latin dance lessons.

Merengue

When introduced to the United States in 1941, it was considered scandalous buy the dance professionals of the day. Both Haiti and the Dominican Republic claim Merengue, and it contains elements of both cultures. Merengue is a fun, exciting and relatively easy dance to learn.

Bachata

Originating in the Dominican Republic, Bachata is now danced all over the world. Bachata music is usually romantic; especially of heartbreak.

Salsa

A very energetic Latin dance. Lots of fun and is characterized by spins, sharp movements, and crisp turns. Popular in the Latin dance clubs.

Jive

Essentially a European version of east coast swing dancing, although Jive is danced to slightly faster music and has a higher "bounce" through the knees.

Samba

A fun, rhythmical Brazilian dance which has been adapted for modern Ballroom Dancing. Samba is characterized by both Latin hip motion and its signature "Samba Bounce".

Paso Doble

Paso Doble is a lively dance modeled after the drama of the Spanish bullfight. In Spanish, Paso Doble translates as "Double Step"

Quickstep

Much like a fast version of the Foxtrot, the Quickstep is a ballroom dance style composed of extremely quick stepping and syncopated foot rhythms.

Mambo

Spicy and fun! Very similar to Salsa in pattern, but Mambo is always danced "on 2" and is a bit more linear in movement.

Rumba

A slow to medium tempo Latin dance characterized by sensual, provocative movements, gestures and Cuban hip motion

Cha Cha

An exciting Latin dance which originated in the 1950s as a slowed-down Mambo. The Cha Cha gets its name from its distinct rhythm (cha cha cha)

Viennese Waltz

This dance was born in the suburbs of Vienna and in the Alpine region of Austria in the 1700s. Like the slow waltz, it uses 3/4 time music but the tempo is much faster.

Tango

Tango originated in Argentina and was adapted for ballroom dancing. It is characterized by its provocative figures, catlike walking action, and staccato (sharp) head movements.

Waltz

Quite possibly the most popular ballroom dance in the world. Waltz is danced to 3/4 time and can be danced to music found in nearly all genres.

Foxtrot

The Foxtrot is a smooth, progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. It is danced to big band (usually vocal) music.

The Derby City Ballroom Dance studios method includes a 3 part system of private dance lessons, group classes, and practice. Private dance lessons are the most important part of becoming an accomplished, comfortable dancer and provide each student with the personalized attention they need to look and feel great dancing. Group dance classes are where variety of patterns and ability to lead or follow any partner are learned. Practice makes perfect right? We host regular Practice Dance Parties for our students to practice their ballroom dancing before heading out into the "real world".
