Classes

Evening Summer Drop-in Classes

kids classes

Our fun and engaging classes for kids are designed to introduce them to the world of dance and help them develop coordination, rhythm, and self-expression.

Twos in Tutus

Generally recommended for ages 24-36 months. Children should be able to take direction, handle props, and participate in a dance classroom environment for 30 minutes at a time.

Tap

A dance performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps, characterized by rhythmical tapping of the toes and heels.

Pom

Pom is a fun, upbeat style emphasizing sharp movements to a heavy beat and incorporating pom-poms. The basic concepts introduced are traditional cheer motions, kick lines, jump technique, ripples, contagions, and extensive formation changes. This style of dance is often showcased on college sidelines and in the NFL.

Pointe

Pointe is an advanced invitation-only program utilizing special ballet shoes with wooden blocks allowing the dancers to balance on their toes. Students must have mastered proper basic ballet technique and demonstrate incredible discipline to be invited into the program.

Parent & Me

Ages 18 months to 3 years. Classes focus on fun, music, and interactive songs and dances. An adult must be present and participatory during class at all times, no exceptions!

Modern Dance

Modern is contemporary dance (Graham, Horton, and other techniques are taught), which is different from ballet- i.e. generally no pirouettes, turnout is not as important- and modern is more “free” in terms of choreography.

Lyrical

Lyrical has been described as the fusion of ballet and jazz. It is a very expressive style of dance that utilizes the music and lyrics to convey emotion. There is a strong emphasis on proper ballet technique, and many technical elements including leaps and turns are incorporated.

Leaps, Tricks, & Turns

Including exercises to strengthen the legs, back and hip flexors to acheive maximum results. Starting from the most basic concepts of relevé, passé, and spotting- working towards advanced combinations.

Jazz

Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance. We teach both classical and more contemporary jazz styles. Our jazz classes will also stress performance skills and will incorporate elements of musical theater.

Hip-Hop

There are many different forms of hip hop, but at BGDTC we usually teach a more general “studio hip hop“ introducing groove, top rock, popping, locking and breaking. Benchmarks of our classes include upbeat moves, fast and fun music, and choreography that alternates between hitting the beat or riding through the beat.

Guided Movement with Kelsey Van Tine

Each week our GM students get a unique classroom experience combining classical ballet technique with creative choreographic concepts. Our dancers love exploring new movement strategies in a positive, creative, low pressure setting

Safe Progressions

Proper Alignment

Injury Prevention

Conditioning

Full body conditioning is essential to facilitate proper technique & skill progressions and to prevent injuries. Our instructors include muscular strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance into all classes. Both small and large muscles are targeted, paying special attention to the hips, ankles and shoulders which are commonly injured in dancers.

Conditioning

Our instructors begin class by properly warming up the body and leading students through a variety of exceecises to increase pliability in the muscles and mobility in the joints. We use the proven progressions of the Alixa flexibility method- focusing on square hips and proper alignment. Safety and injury prevention are our top priority. We do NOT believe in forced flexibility.

Flexibility

Flexibility & Conditioning

Baton

Learn the basics of baton twirling including rolls, tosses & spins! Baton twirling is a great activity for young people because it teaches spatial awareness (front, back, left, right, up, down) fine motor skills, and hand/eye coordination.

Ballet

Beauty, flow and elegance are inherent in the elements of ballet. Ballet is a classical dance form that can be mastered by itself or used as a technical base or supplement to other dance forms. Classes focus on overall body alignment and awareness with emphasis on proper usage of feet and legs and execution of turnout. Carriage and usage of upper torso and arms are also stressed. Traditional barre work, center work and combinations are included in all classes.

Acro Dance

Acrodance encompasses 5 different skill areas including flexibility, strength, balance, limbering, and tumbling. Our instructors utilize the Acrobatic Arts leveled syllabus to ensure safety, prevent injuries, and allow for proper progressions. We are proud to be the only Module 1 &2 certified Studio in Central Kentucky.
