About Portland Ballet

Portland Ballet, a cornerstone of the cultural landscape in Portland, Maine, was founded in 1980 and has been dedicated to enriching its community through ballet performance and education for over four decades. As the region's professional ballet company and affiliated Portland School of Ballet, it offers leading classical training rooted in a Vaganova-based curriculum for dancers of all ages and skill levels. Programs range from Young Dancer Classes (ages 1-7) and a Community Division for all ages, to Junior, Senior, and Pre-Professional divisions for dedicated students, including advanced study on pointe. The curriculum emphasizes developing artistry, musicality, and lifelong skills in a healthy, supportive environment, with special programs like "Ballet Essentials" for true beginners. Beyond classical ballet, instruction also extends to contemporary and jazz dance, catering to those seeking fun and fitness. Classes

Pre-Professional Division

The Pre-Professional Division is designed for students who are looking to join a professional dance company or to continue their studies by pursuing a Ballet Degree in college, and is accepted by audition for dancers preparing for college programs or a professional career.

Senior Division

The Senior Division provides strong technical and artistic training for teens in an environment that allows for maximum growth and achievement, offering ballet, pointe and pre-pointe, adjunct classes, and performance opportunities.

Junior Division

The Junior Division will help students ages 7-12 build the strength and understanding necessary for long-term success as both dancers and well-rounded individuals, focusing on structured levels for developing proper ballet technique.

Teen/Adult Drop-In classes

Beginner and intermediate Teen/Adult Drop-In classes are proudly offered for members of our community who may be new, or returning, to ballet, providing an accessible way to engage with the art form.

Young Dancer Classes

YOUNG DANCER CLASSES

Senior Stretch

This class is designed for seniors with limited mobility and structured for those who would take class from a seated position or with mobility aids such as canes or walkers. More than just an exercise class, our senior dancers will experience the benefits of stretching and strengthening in a studio designed for dance and the impact of gentle movement supported by music to maximize the brain body connection and find more ways to connect with and express themselves. Senior Stretch classes are 45-minutes in length.

Young Men’s Ballet (Ages 10+)

Young Men’s Class will be taught by Pre-Professional Division Director Sabir Yapparov, and will focus on building strength and agility as well as a fostering a sense of camaraderie. Emphasis will be placed on building coordination for jumps and turns and strengthening the core and upper body in preparation for partnering. This class is intended for students in Portland School of Ballet’s Pre-Professional Division, Senior Division, or Junior Division Level 4 or their equivalents ages 10+.

Community Ballet is a free group class for children ages 7-12. Portland Ballet and Portland Youth Dance have partnered to provide free beginner-level ballet classes to children in need in the Greater Portland area. Classes incorporate technique, stretching, musicality, and choreography.

This class is intended for Teen and Adult beginner students to learn ballet basics in order to move into our drop-in classes (Open Classes) or Portland School of Ballet's Senior Division ( PSB ).
