Teaching adults of all ages how to dance together since 1978. Students come to us for many reasons; sometimes couples come in all excited to prepare for an upcoming wedding. Other times people come in preparing for an upcoming trip or a family member’s wedding. And sometimes just to learn to dance for the sake of learning so they can have fun socially, or at times it is for a fun way to exercise. Single people come in looking for a new hobby, exercise or to improve their social skills, or to meet others.

Waltz is a beautiful and elegant dance with origins dating back to the 1700s. It is characterized by its smooth movements, body contact, and long, reaching steps, emphasizing grace, poise, precision, and discipline. Often called the champagne of dances, it is reserved for special occasions like anniversaries and first dances, making it a sophisticated choice for ballroom dancing.

We teach the Viennese Waltz as one of the dances that are taught in our ballroom dance instruction curriculum in our dance studios in Maryland and Virginia. Viennese waltz has a particular appeal due to its more disciplined approach to pace. This is a gentleman’s dance, not an amateur’s game.

As a rhythm dance Samba is not danced in body contact therefore, the frame is narrower than what it would be in smooth dances. Rumba Bolero is both sentimental and romantic. It is Cuban in origin, the music is slow and sweet as a ballad with a Spanish flavor. The patterns are derived from the Mambo and it is a very popular dance among good dancers. There is a subtle, syncopated beat in the background and it is a very slow dance. The melody is predominant. Rumba Bolero is danced on the 2 beat as we hold the one. The music is similar in nature to the Rumba but much slower.

The incredibly fun dance of Polka has two different versions. We teach the German way. If you have ever heard Polka music, then you know how lively and fast-paced it is.

Merengue is a rhythm dance danced with the feet landing flat on the dance floor while taking very small steps. Merengue uses Cuban motion as well as Nonega motion. As a rhythm dance, Merengue is not danced in contact, therefore the frame is much narrower. Merengue is considered a dance of interpretation as it enables you to move to the way the music motivates you to. This is a style that embraces improvised creativity depending on the speed and motion of the music.

Mambo is Cuban in origin. This dance utilizes flat foot work, Cuban Motion and since it is not danced in body contact, the frame is much narrower. Offering a perfect cohesion of sensuality and grace, Mambo dancing allows you to find a careful balance between leading and following. While rooted in Cha Cha, it holds its own unique place in the arena of ballroom dance that remains popular to this day.
