About Freeform Dance Academy

Freeform Dance Academy, located in Westminster, Massachusetts, cultivates a passion for dance in students of all ages and skill levels. Building on the legacy of Kathy Roy's School of Dance, established in 1982, the academy was renamed in 2016 under the creative direction of Kelley Stroup, who brings extensive training in Pointe, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Modern dance. The academy fosters a nurturing and welcoming environment, valuing every dancer's personal essence and encouraging them to 'Free Your Movement and Become A Freeformer!' Our dedicated staff, including instructors Audrey Forte, Bella Nano, Kimberly Soel, Lisa Dugas, and Raeanna Deloge, offer a diverse range of classes for ages preschool through 12th grade. Students can explore fundamental Ballet techniques, energetic Jazz drawing from Broadway and African Dance, rhythmic Tap (Broadway and Rhythm styles), expressive Modern and Contemporary classes incorporating improvisation and floor work, and vibrant Hip Hop from introductory 'Pop Hop' to advanced techniques. We also offer Acro classes for aspiring acrobats, focusing on flexibility and foundational skills. Committed dancers have the opportunity to join our competitive teams, FFDA Competition Team, and participate in Choreography Classes requiring audition and Summer Intensive participation. For advanced students in Grades 6-12, dedicated Pre-Pointe and Pointe classes are available with a strong emphasis on continued Ballet enrollment. Our nine-month season from September to May culminates in an original annual performance, and Summer Dance Intensives in August provide focused training. Freeform Dance Academy equips students with technical proficiency, expressive artistry, confidence, and a lifelong love for performance.

Advanced Acro

This class is geared towards the advanced acrobatics dancer and will build on foundational skills. Dancers must be able to do the following to enroll: cartwheel (R/L), shoulder rolls, bridge kick over or back walkover, head stand, and chin stand.

Beginner Acro

This class is geared towards the beginner acrobatics dancer. This course is designed to increase flexibility and learn the foundational skills of acro dance.

Pre-Pointe/Pointe

A solid and continued foundation in ballet is required to dance on pointe. A students invitation to join the class is based on individual criteria. Pointe is an extremely physically demanding dance style, and not all dancers are equipped to do it. No two dancers are the same. No matter the skill level of the dancer, not all dancers can dance on pointe. Dancers will complete one year in Pre-Pointe shoes before graduating to Pointe shoes. Continued enrollment in the Ballet class in the dancers designated age group is required.

Choreography Classes

Dancers are placed following auditions and Summer Intensive. Please see our Competition Team (OUR FREEFORMERS) for specific team information.

Pre Pointe/Pointe

Pointe work begins at FFDA around the age of 12. Dancers must have a STRONG background of Ballet technique in order to be considered for Pre-Pointe/Pointe classes. Dancers must do a minimum of 1 YEAR Pre-Pointe before moving into Pointe classes. All pointe classes are invitation only. Dancers progress individually, and no two dancers are advanced on the same scheduled timeline.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop dance refers to a street dance style that is primarily performed to hip-hop music. This style of dance is constantly evolving, and FFDA embraces this style as it grows. It includes a wide range of technical skills such as breaking, popping, locking, and using the body in a more nebulous manner. FFDA uses all the elements of this style of dance to make Hip Hop a positive and fun experience for students. Affectionately called "Pop Hop," our younger students are introduced to this fast paced, freeing style of dance in a fun environment with age appropriate choreography. As dancers grow, they embrace and master more advanced Hip Hop techniques.

Modern/Contemporary

Modern dance is a "newer" style of dance developed in the late 19th and early 20th century. It refused aspects of classical ballet and broke away from its confinements and strict technical movements. Modern dance now encompasses a wide range of styles, many of which are identified by their creator. There are over a thousand types of modern dance, and Kelley Hudson has created a modern technique inspired by a countless number of them. Students study both Lyrical and Contemporary movement, terms now used to divide this open style of dance. Modern classes include improvisation, floor work, creative movement, and musical connectivity.

Tap

Both Broadway Style and Rhythm Tap are taught in all tap classes at FFDA. Broadway style tap focuses more on the "dancing" aspect of tap lending itself more to Musical Theater. Rhythm Tap focuses more on the musicality of dance, creating a style that is more connected to the sounds of the taps themselves. We use a graded tap curriculum that ensures consistency and growth with all our tap classes.

Jazz

Jazz is a general term used to describe a dance style that can encompass many different or more specific stylistic elements. Its roots in Broadway culture and African Dance can result in more Musical Theater style of movement or a more contemporary or interpretive dance. The foundation of jazz technique is what unifies all styles of jazz: turns, leaps, high kicks, and expressive hands and hips.

Ballet

Ballet is the solid foundation of all Freeformers. This highly technical form of dance teaches students control, poise, strength, and flexibility. It uses constant and precise posture, turn-out, extension, and pointing of the feet. All students are encouraged to study ballet throughout their dance career to enhance all other technique. While it is stereotypically "slow" or "classical," Ballet is arguably the most difficult style of dance to master.

Creative Movement

Open to our younger movers, this style of dance is a blend of creativity and structured movement. Dancers use creative songs, props and dance activities to learn the visual and creative side of dance. This class is considered a stepping stone towards Modern dance, which is offered to our older dancers.
