Debbie Felton's Academy of Dance, located in Livonia, Michigan, is a premier destination for aspiring dancers of all ages, fostering a love for movement and performance. Led by Master Dance Educator Debbie Felton, President for the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters, the academy boasts a dedicated faculty committed to nurturing talent. Classes

Int./Adv. Tumbling

Teacher Approval Required Non-Recital Class Intermediate/Advanced Tumbling is for the experienced tumbler. It will continue to challenge dancers, through repetition, how to execute skills safely and effectively with strength, power, agility, and control. All classes begin with a warm-up followed by stretching with a focus on the ankles, wrists, neck, and back. In class, students will learn body awareness and how to correctly complete a skill without injury. Classes focus on a wide variety of intermediate to advanced skills including forward rolls, handstands, back and front walkovers, aerials, front and back handsprings, jumps, and leg holds. Tumbling classes provide important supplemental training for dancers but are open and accessible to non-dancers as well.

Beg./Int. Tumbling

Ages 8 and up Non-Recital Class Tumbling teaches dancers, through repetition, how to execute skills safely and effectively with strength, power, agility, and control. Tumbling Ages 4-8

Non-Recital Class Tumbling ages 4-8 years offers young dancers an introduction to the fundamentals of tumbling that will provide the building blocks necessary for their potential development in dance and overall fitness. By learning the benefits of flexibility, balance, strength, and body control inherent in all aspects of tumbling, your dancer will be better equipped to safely enjoy and excel in all of their future athletic endeavors.

Tap Grades 3, 4, 6, 7, 8

Tap dancers are musicians. We use the Al Gilbert method, mixed with a variety of tap styles. Dancers will gain experience in learning tap vocabulary through practicing a variety of tap steps. Also, developing confidence in improvision technique and turns as the dancers progress through levels.

Tap Ages 8-12

Ages 8-12 years old This beginner level class focuses on learning and reviewing basic rhythm patterns starting with simple combinations that include shuffles, flaps, stomps, stamps, etc. emphasizing clarity of rhythm and sound, and the development of style.

Tap 2

Age s 5-7 years old Tap 2 is a continuation of Tap 1, Dancers will continue to add to their tap 1 skills. Tap dancers will develop musicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, tap technique, rhythm, and body awareness in a caring, nurturing environment. This class is an excellent way for dancers to continue to learn the many benefits of the performing arts, gain self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Tap 1

Ages 4-6 years old Tap 1 is a class to inspire creativity and teaches the fundamentals of tap. Dancers will develop musicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, tap technique, rhythm, and body awareness in a caring, nurturing environment. This class is an excellent way for dancers to be introduced to the many benefits of the performing arts, gain self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

ADV. Musical Theatre*

(Teacher Approval) Advanced Musical Theatre is a continuation of learning stage presence and acting. Classes include dance technique practice, acting and improvisation activities, as well as dance performance. This class is for the well-seasoned dancer who likes the spotlight, drama, and telling stories through dance. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility, strength, confidence, and performance.

Pre-Teen Musical Theatre

Ages 11-14 years old Musical Theatre is the fusion of dancing and acting with performance on stage. Classes include dance technique practice, lip syncing, acting and improvisation activities, as well as dance performance. These classes are for dancers who like the spotlight, drama, and telling a story through dance. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility, strength, confidence, and performance. As dancers’ progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Kids Musical Theatre

Ages 8-10 years old Does your child dream of dancing on Broadway? Students will learn the dance technique and acting involved for dancing in a musical! Dancers will perform their favorite songs from a variety of musicals & movie musicals. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility, strength, confidence, and performance. This class is perfect for dancers, actors, as well as dancers who aspire to join a show choir or drama club.

Lyrical

Ages 11-18 years old (Ballet Required) Lyrical is for dancers who like precision and rhythm, physical challenges, and personal style and expression particularly with lyrically expressive songs. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility and strength, rhythms, and isolation of body parts, and expressing personal style. Dancers must be enrolled in a ballet class simultaneously to be eligible for this class.

Lyrical

Ages 8-12 years old ( Ballet Required ) Lyrical is a combination of ballet and jazz techniques. This is a very inspiring, expressive, and emotional style of dance, matching the lyrics of the music being danced to. Movements and steps are very fluid, graceful, and continuous while performing this style of dance. Dancers must be enrolled in a ballet class simultaneously to be eligible for this class.

Adult Jazz

For adults 18 years and up! Come join our FUN adult classes and be introduced to or brush up on your dance skills and get in an amazing workout! Basic jazz dance technique, including musicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, and rhythm will be part of the fun & funk. We will be learning a routine for recital (not mandatory to participate). Previous dance experience a plus, but not necessary.

Jazz 2*

Ages 1 2-17 years old (teacher approval) Jazz 2 is a continuation of Jazz 1. Dancers will continue to add to their skills. This class is a stylistic class. Ages 4-6 years old Jazz 1 is fun and exciting; it inspires creativity and teaches the start of fundamentals of jazz. Dancers will develop musicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, dance technique, rhythm, and body awareness in a caring, nurturing environment. This class is an excellent way for children to be introduced to the many benefits of the performing arts, gain self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Adult Hip Hop

Ages 18 & up In this hip class dancers are taught to get funky and sweat with popular hip-hop moves. It also gives the dancer knowledge in coordination, physical strength and promotes a fun and rewarding experience!

Hip Hop Ages 14 & Up

Ages 14-18 years old This hip hop class is a fast-paced and energetic dance style using the latest street/urban dance moves set to hip hop music. Hip hop encompasses a wide range of street styles including breaking, locking, and popping. In this hip class dancers are taught to stylize their technique along with popular hip-hop moves. It also gives the dancer knowledge in coordination, physical strength and promotes self-confidence.

Pre-Teen Hip Hop

Ages 11-14 years old This class is a continuation of hip hop ages 8-10 years old, Dancers will continue to add to their skills in this form of dance. Including, balance, flexibility, and coordination. All music is edited and age appropriate. This is a very energetic class.

Kids Hip Hop

Ages 8-10 years old In this high energy class, dancers will learn better balance, flexibility, and coordination. This class offers dancers the chance to learn some street moves and age-appropriate steps in popping, locking and break dance movements. Including the start of stalls, kick-ups etc. All music is edited and age appropriate. This is a very fun and funky class.

Intro To Hip Hop

Ages 5 - 7 years old Intro hip hop is a fun class that inspires creativity and teaches the fundamentals of hip hop. Dancers will develop coordination, strength, dance technique, rhythm, and body awareness in a caring, exciting, nurturing environment. This class is an excellent way for dancers to be introduced to the many benefits of the performing arts.

Advanced Pointe*

Must be currently enrolled in a Cecchetti Ballet class, have passed grade II or higher , and taken the intermediate pointe class. Instructors will let the dancer know when she is ready for Advanced Pointe work.

Intermediate Pointe*

Must be currently enrolled in a Cecchetti Ballet grade II or higher dance class . This training is for the dancers who have achieved a certain level of technical proficiency and physical maturity. Instructors will let the dancer know when he/she is ready for Intermediate Pointe class work .

Pre-Pointe*

Must be currently enrolled in a Cecchetti Ballet class and have passed their grade I cecchetti exam. This training is for the dancers who have achieved a certain level of technical proficiency and physical maturity. Pointe students typically start at the age of 11 or 12, with extensive training, proper placement, turn out, and strength. Instructors will let the dancer know when he/she is ready for Pointe class.

Cecchetti Ballet

Currently Debbie Felton's Academy of Dance has the privledge of offering Cecchetti ballet classes for grades I-VII A ballet method of which classical ballet training comes from. Developed by Enrico Cecchetti. Cecchetti training is a rigorous ballet method which pays careful attention to the laws of anatomy. It develops all of the qualities essential to the dancer: balance, poise, strength, elevation, elasticity, “ballon”, etc. It is classic in its purity and clear-cut style. Dancers that have shown their understanding in both verbal and performance at each level of Cecchetti Grade I and higher are offered the opportunities to go to exams in March of each dance season if the teacher feels the dancer is ready to test.

Pre-Cecchetti

Ages 8-12 years old A great place to start if interested in ballet at this age. A ballet method of which classical ballet training comes from. Developed by Enrico Cecchetti. Cecchetti training is a rigorous ballet method which pays careful attention to the laws of anatomy. It develops all of the qualities essential to the dancer: balance, poise, strength, elevation, elasticity, “ballon”, etc. It is classic in its purity and clear-cut style. Dancers prepare for exam opportunities once reaching the Cecchetti grade I ballet level (after pre-cec chetti).

Ballet Level 2

Ages 5 - 7 years old This 30 minute class is the second level of ballet for our younger dancers. It still incorporates more structure to the ballet movements from ballet level 1 to prepare dancers for the Pre-Cecchetti ballet class.

Ballet Level 1

Ages 4 - 6 years old This 30 minute class is the first level of ballet for our younger dancers. It still incorporates the fun with more ballet movements to prepare dancers for the ballet level 2 class (ages 5-7).

Creative Movement/ Pre-Ballet

Ages 3-5 years old This 30 minute class introduces children to music and movement. The fun and excitement promotes fine motor skills by using props and incorporating pre-ballet movements. Children should be out of diapers and able to go into classroom without parent.

Conditioning

Conditioning will help you build strength and improve your flexibility! This class is built as an essential toolbox class for all dancers as a comprehensive workout to fine tune your skills and build stamina. All ages 10 & up are welcome (including adults!)

Tumbling

Tumbling refers strictly to acrobatic passes and learning to have perfect technique while doing so. You may remember watching the Olympics and seeing Olympic athletes work through their floor routine, connecting numerous passes along a spring raised floor with dance-like movements. That discipline is tumbling, and when incorporated into gymnastics training, it is often encorporated into more advanced dance classes

Adult Tap

For adults 18 years and up! An amazing workout with a fantastic group of dancers ! M usicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, and rhythm will be part of the fun. We will be learning a routine for recital (not mandatory to participate). Previous dance experience a plus, but not necessary. This class is for Beginning/Continuing tap technique.

Tap

The Al Gilbert method of tap is our primary source, with different levels 1-9. Bar work, center work, and across the floor combinations are used. This method is combined with tap steps, and rhythm combinations to develop rhythm and musicality in tap dance.

Musical Theatre

If you like Broadway, you will love musical theatre class. You will be dancing, singing/lip-syncing to great show tunes.

Lyrical

This form of interpretive dance which uses movements from ballet and jazz to tell a story with music. A ballet class is required when taking a lyrical class.

Jazz

Jazz dance technique, including musicality, coordination, strength, flexibility, rhythm, and start of turns began during the 1920's at the start of the jazz era. All music is edited and age appropriate. This dance style is known for its upbeat music and choreography style. Jazz is a great foundation for musical theatre classes as well as the foundation for many other forms of dance.

Hip Hop

E nergetic dance style using the latest street/urban dance moves set to hip hop music. Hip hop encompasses a wide range of street styles including breaking, locking, and popping. Age appropriate steps and music. Learn to use your own style. This is a very fun and funky class.

Competition Dance Team

FOR THE MORE SERIOUS DANCERS!! If dance is your dancers favorite extra-curricular activity, then the competitive dance team is for you. Ballet is necessary for all members along with production class, stretch & flex, jazz and tap. If interested, please sign up at the desk for auditions. Everyone makes the team as long as you are willing to give it 110%. Audition is for placement on a team.

Ballet

A definite necessity for all dance forms. You will develop strength, balance, technique, and proper body alignment and placement. You create flexibility through bar and floor work and develop grace while learning terminology.
