About Mactir Academy of Irish Dance

Mactir Academy of Irish Dance, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a premier destination for the study and celebration of Irish Step dance, founded in 2013 by Directors Emily Wolff, TCRG, and Ciara Reynolds. With a passion for fostering a nurturing environment for dancers of all ages and abilities, Emily and Ciara bring extensive experience as performers and educators, having danced and taught with renowned Irish dance schools and performed with notable musicians and bands. Their expertise is supported by a dedicated coaching staff including Liz Dengate, Cleo McGuigan, Brogan Frey, Neave Hennessy, Payten Miller-Zarambo, Kristina Rexroth, Rose Thompson, Jade Weller, and Berit Wicker, many of whom are accomplished dancers with regional and national competition experience. Mactir Academy offers a comprehensive Irish dance curriculum designed to build foundational skills and progress to advanced competitive techniques. Programs range from the "Wolf Pup" program for beginners to the Alpha Program for experienced dancers aiming for Prizewinner/Championship level competition. Other class levels focus on developing soft shoe and hard shoe fundamentals and performance pieces. The Academy also boasts a robust Adult Program with three levels and specialized Competitive and Ceili Team Programs, including Advanced Beginner Competition, Novice-Prizewinner Competition, Competitive Ceili Teams, and Championship Competition, preparing dancers for local, regional, national, and international events. Classes

Championship Competition

This program is to built to supplement the ALPHA program for dancers that also choose to compete. This is the highest level of competition and additional studio time is required to prepare for local and major competitions. Dancers who have qualified to dance solos at Oireachtas, or compete at the Preliminary or Open Championship level may attend these weekly classes.

Two 90 Minute Classes Per Weeks
Competitive Ceili Teams

Competitive Ceili teams are specifically for our Oireachtas and National competitions. Placement on the team is mainly determined by age and size limits due to commission rules. Competitive Ceili dancers compete at our Regional Championships (Oireachtas) over Thanksgiving weekend each year. You will be invited to do ceili teams in the Spring following St. Patrick's Day and we will do a parent info meeting to answer all additional questions at the time.

Novice - Prizewinner Competition

This program is to built to supplement the BETA or ALPHA program for dancers that also choose to compete. As dancers move into these higher levels an increased level of preparation and training is required. Dancers who compete Novice or Prizewinner level and are learning or compete slow hornpipes and treble jigs at competition can join this class on a weekly basis.

One 90 Minute Class Per Week
Advanced Beginner Competition

This program is to built to supplement the OMEGA or BETA program for dancers that also choose to compete. We offer up to 6 local competitions throughout the year and many more across our region year-round. This allows dancer to continue to work on their competition material throughout the year and feel confident come competition day! Dancers who compete Adv Beginner or Beginner II level at competition can join this class on a semi monthly basis. We will cover all 6 traditional dances in these classes.

One 60 Minute Class Per Week
Adult Program

One 60 - 90 Minute Class Per Week. Mactir has 3 levels in the Adult Program (Ages 13 and up). Beginners learn the fundamentals of soft shoe & hard shoe Irish dance & individual & group choreography with no requirement to purchase shoes. Intermediate dancers continue to build upon the fundamentals & are able to join the year-round program , learning Novice-level material & 2 performance pieces per year. Beginner & Intermediate dancers will have the opportunity to perform during our St. Patrick's Day & Summer performances & additional performance & competition opportunities throughout the year. The Advanced Adult program is open to adult dancers with several years, of experience. These dancers learn Prizewinner/Championship level material & have performance opportunities with local & international bands. Adult dancers wear Team or Summer costumes.

Alpha Program

Two 90 - 120 Minute Classes Per Week. After dancing for several years, Alphas learn Prizewinner/Championship level competition material & the largest performance pieces. Alphas have opportunities to perform with International Musicians, & compete regionally, nationally, & internationally in the competitive program. Dancers are expected to perform during our St. Patrick's Day & Summer performances. Alphas wear the Purple Team & Summer Costume. Dancers are in this Program until they retire.

Two 90 - 120 Minute Classes Per Week
Beta Program

Two 60-90 Minute Classes Per Week. Additional studio time is required in the Beta Program to learn all 6 traditional steps & 3 performance pieces per year. Steps & skills increase in difficulty in both hard shoe & soft shoe. Dancers are expected to perform during our St. Patrick's Day & Summer performances. Many beta dancers add extra competition classes to further competitive goals. Betas wear the Team & Summer Costume or the Universal Costume. Dancers are in this Program 1-3 years.

Two 60-90 Minute Classes Per Week
Omega Program

One 60 Minute Class Per Week. The Omega program is open to second year dancers upon completing a full year in the Wolf Pup Program. Dancers continue to build on the fundamentals of Soft Shoe Dancing & begin learning Hard Shoe! Dancers are expected to perform during our St. Patrick's Day & Summer performances. Omegas wear the introductory skirt or pant costumes. Dancers are in this Program 1-3 years.

Wolf Pup (Beginner) Program

One 45 Minute Class Per Week. Wolf Pups U6 & Wolf Pups 6+ classes are open to brand new beginners - no previous dance experience required. These dancers will have the opportunity to perform during our St. Patrick's Day & Summer performances. Wolf Pups wear the introductory skirt or pant costumes. Dancers are in this program for 1 year.

Weekend Wolf Pups U6

We are offering Winter-Spring Sessions for Wolf Pups under 6. Both classes are open to children with no previous dance experience. Try something new and join the Wolf Pack!
