About Pomegranate Studios

Nestled in the artistic heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Pomegranate Studios, founded in 1996 by Myra Krien, is a vibrant dance school and performing arts organization. The studio offers high-quality instruction primarily in Raks Sharqui and various fusion forms of belly dance, embracing a wide range of students from absolute beginners to seasoned dancers. Beyond its regular classes, Pomegranate Studios is celebrated for its innovative Pomegranate SEEDs® programming, which integrates dance with mentorship and life skills for children, teens, and adults. This program also includes a teacher training component. The resident dance company, The Mosaic Dance Company, is a nationally and internationally acclaimed ensemble that has graced stages since 1996. Pomegranate Studios fosters a warm and inclusive environment, emphasizing not only technique and movement but also cultural awareness, historical context, and musicality. Students have opportunities to perform in regular Student Salons and can progress to pre-professional levels with the Mosaic Dance Company. Little SEEDs

Developed for children ages 9-12 this class focuses on kinesthetic awareness, furthering dance vocabulary and technique, as well as deepening cultural understanding of the dance movements, music and history. Emphasis is placed on building healthy self-esteem. These goals are met by exploring World Dance movement that spans the regions of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain, and the music of these same cultures, as well as talking circles, and games, culminating in a performance for friends and family. The hour long class begins with a cardio-building practicum, followed by a detailed breakdown of each movement, and each class ends with a movement game designed to build performance skills and dance confidence.

SEEDLINGs

Designed for children ages 5-8, this class focuses on kinesthetic awareness, building fine and large motor skills, developing a dance vocabulary and maturing each child’s ability to emotionally regulate, laying the foundation for healthy self-esteem. These goals are met by exploring world dance movement that spans the regions of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and Spain, and the music of these same cultures, as well as talking circles, and games. The hour long class begins with a warm up, followed by a practicum which introduces the students to basic movement technique, cultural exploration of the dance movements and music, and free dance time. Each class includes a fun interactive game designed to build performance confidence and ends with a brief cool-down stretch that transitions the group into a talking circle.

Made famous by the likes of Rachael Brice, Mardi Love and Zoe Jakes, this tribal fusion choreography harkens back to that slap dash era.

Belly Baile`Flamenco Fusion or Tango Fusion

20 different choreographies are available, as well as skirt work, manton, and technique work with hands, arms, posture and turns from Flamenco and Tango. Belly Baile` is a fusion form created by Myra Krien which combines movements from Flamenco, Tango, ATS®, Indian Temple Dance, Oriental, Jazz and Hip-Hop.

PID: A Winged Migration

The most profound experience in PID is the moment when we are all dancing together. Without words, without choreography, we move as one organism sharing the experience of union. This profound moment can take time to create through training and learning the language. Through a brief exercise, we will create and share in this experience.

The Language of Love ~ Healing Through Ecstasy

Through the creation of sacred geometric symbols, such as circles, figure eights, spirals and vibrations, we will explore the opening of our hearts to the healing powers of love through ecstatic experience. No previous dance experience required. If you are a professional dancer, take your performance to knew depths and heights, by experiencing these techniques, to bring the love within, throughout.

Veil: The Revelation of Intimacy

Beyond technique we must ask ourselves, 'What is our dance about?' 'What are we saying?' We are often taught that the veil dance is a 'conceal and reveal dance', a dance of mystery and seduction that can, as in the dance of the seven veils, lead a man to his death. What is the history and context of the veil? What is our story? What does the veil reveal about each of us?

All About Shimmies

Drill your shimmies to an articulate perfection with support exercises and an anatomical break down that leads to exquisite precision. The following Shimmies will be taught: Vibrational Shimmies and Layering, Traveling 3/4 Shimmy Down Up Down and Up Down Up, Tunisian Twisty Shimmies, Hagala, Ghawazee, Maya 3/4, Shimmy Shimmy Drop, Out Up Down.

Commercial Dance Fusion

This fun and energetic class blends the styles of contemporary, jazz, funk, lyrical and more. Class begins with a warm-up and goes right into learning choreography. Learn routines akin to today's popular choreographers such as Parris Goebel, Shawn Bankman, and more to all of today's best music! No air-to-floor work is incorporated into routines.

INTRODUCTION TO MODERN DANCE This modern class begins introducing adult students to the beautiful technique modern dance showcases. While we do not work in a particular style of technique, CB's class blends styles of Horton, Limon, and Graham to create a class ideal for the adult body. We limit floor work and do not do any air to floor movements. This class is a great way to build balance, stability, and learn how to move with joy in a technique that complements ballet training so well.

Intermediate Ballet Technique & Pre-Pointe/Conditioning

Intermediate Ballet technique classes introduce the student to more complex and challenging footwork and combinations while concurrently building musicality and artistry. Intermediate 1 class is ideal for students who have been in ballet for a minimum of 1 year, while Intermediate 2 students typically have 2+ years of training. Intermediate classes assume dancers are both familiar and comfortable with French terminology and foundational ballet moves. Pre-Pointe/Conditioning provides students with additional strengthening, flexibility, and core conditioning exercises. This is an ideal class for any dancer wanting to improve their ballet technique and prepare for advancement, and for those dancers wanting to dance sur la pointe.

Known in the Middle East as Raks al Sharqi (which translated means dance of the orient) this class offers an introduction to the foundational movements, rhythms and history of Egyptian style belly dance while interweaving dance from many different regions and cultures of the Middle East. The SEEDs (Self-esteem, Empowerment and Education through Dance) Teacher Training is a life-changing intensive certification program for dancers who want to bring change to their communities. From Earth to Sky

Each song is a poem, each dancer a story, both personal and universal. In this improvisational workshop we will employ exercises and prompts to open more deeply to the sounds we hear, in order to more fully express ourselves and the meaning our our human story.

V is for Vision

You are a PHENOMENAL being. This workshop is an exploration through different exercises and modalities of sight, seeing and vision as it relates to dance, choreography and creation. Dancers of any dance form can enjoy this workshop.

Story Telling: Taxsim to Tarab ~The Language of Love

This workshop explores emotional story telling through the musical stylings of Taxsim and Tarab. We will investigate the emotional landscape of different instrumentation, informed by storyline and layered with emotional context. (Advanced)

Musicality and Expression for Dancers

Dancers of any dance form can enjoy this workshop. As we are the "light expression of the sound," we will investigate and explore, through deep listening, the universal sacred geometry of dance language as it unites with instrumentation and lyricism.

S*O*U*L Signature Oriental Universal Language

Completely New! Get your Raks groove flowing with this new improv style! Arabic dance is the dance of the soul! These signature Oriental combinations can be used in both individual and group improvisation for Raks Sharqi. Eight exciting S.O.U.L. combinations are taught in this workshop, each from a different family of movement and in a different floor pattern:

TAKE IT OFF! The ART of Conceal & Reveal

This workshop will explore "taking it off!", from removing a glove, to exposing a knee, to going "all the way". In bellydance we often use the veil to express the Western Orientalism fantasy, conceal and reveal. We will discuss and play with this idea as well as any other you wish to, feel free to bring any prop you like (suggested props: veils, hats, gloves, shoes, or any other piece of clothing). We will create a fun and safe atmosphere in which to play!

Sexy Hip Circles

Learn the signature hip circles of the greatest dancers in the history of our art: Samia Gamal, Nadia Gamal, Fifi Abdou, Sohair Zeiki, and others. This workshop covers the anatomy of a hip circle, teaching solid technique and providing an analytical tool to break down any hip circle. Twelve different hip circles will be taught:

Breathtaking Veil

This workshop teaches you the mastery of veil work. Working with three different varieties of veil; silk, chiffon and organza, we cover the following: history of the veil, musical selection, veil wraps, beginnings and endings, veil technique, fluidity of movements, and over ten veil movements and turns: sail, cross-over and under, keyhole/butterfly, Arabesque, grapevine, poofs, thread the needle, chalkboard circle, chalkboard 1 1/2, and turns.
