Lyrical

Lyrical dance combines jazz and ballet technique while feeling and emotion is developed to interpret the music. Often, a story will be told through this style. Flexibility, strength, and control are stressed making ballet a mandatory class to coincide with the students lyrical training.

Modern

Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines instead of following a structured code of technique, as in ballet. Another characteristic of modern dance in opposition to ballet is the deliberate use of gravity. Whereas classical ballet dancers strive to be light and airy on their feet, modern dancers often use their body weight to enhance movement. The student must be enrolled in ballet in order to enroll in this class.

Hip Hop

At the start of the 1970’s, Hip Hop Dance was born out of social street dancing primarily being performed to hip hop music. This style was often danced “free-style”, but has adapted to the commercial industry to include New Style Hip Hop and Jazz Funk, where followed choreography is the focus incorporating styles such as; breaking, locking, popping and house. Students are introduced to isolations, musicality, strength building and performance.

Jazz

A living art form, influenced by cultural trends, technique and personalities. Emphasis is placed on isolations, style, technique, music and athleticism. Jazz dance builds coordination of all parts of the body. Students work on progressions of dance steps while expressing themselves.

Tap

Tap is an exciting dance form that makes the dancer the musician. It explores the use of the smaller muscles of the feet and body, along with the larger ones. Significance is placed on the articulation of tap sounds with clarity and speed while performing. Emphasis is placed on rhythm, accent, shading, and weight changing.

Pointe

We also offer Pointe—an advancement of ballet technique in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. Placement is offered by instructor referral to dancers 12 years of age and older, taking a weekly ballet class at 5678 Dance. The student must have 4 or more consecutive years of ballet training.

Ballet

Ballet is the most important class a student can take. It is the foundation for all dance movement and will only enhance and improve a student’s progress in other dance styles. Ballet challenges students’ minds, with learning and memorizing patterns and sequences, and challenges students’ bodies by building correct body posture, fluidity of movement and body awareness. It provides a student with balance, coordination and strength. This class will consist of the ballet barre, dancing across the floor, and a dance combination in the center.
