Improvisation & Choreography Composition

Think creating choreography is easy? Think again! Creating dynamic choreography and learning how to improv takes practice! This class will equip dancers with all the necessary tools they need to feel confident in creating their own movement. Improvisational Dance is an important skill, but it can be intimidating at first! Creating movement “out of nothing” can seem almost impossible. Our instructors will guide dancers through improvisational exercises so they learn how to create movement “on the spot.” Not only is it important to be confident to create movement, it’s important to learn how to turn that movement into a sequence, and then a phrase, and then a whole dance!… Which leads us to the Choreography Composition part of class! Sometimes, improv alone is enough to create a dance; however, sometimes we need a little help to get the creativity flowing. Our instructors will equip dancers with all the “tools” they need in their “choreographer’s tool box” to create dynamic choreography. There are many tricks that help us get “un-stuck” when our bodies want to repeat the same thing over and over again, or when our brains are too tired to create something out of nothing. Choreography Composition is another important skill for all dancers!

Turns, Leaps, & Conditioning

Do you want to take your training to the next level? This class is for you! This class is great for dancers and cheerleaders who want to increase their strength, stamina, and learn new skills to “spice up” their routines! Each class will dedicate time to conditioning and stretching–blending elements of Pilates, deep stretch, and calisthenics to increase core strength, control, and lengthen the spine as well as increase your dancer’s extensions & overall flexibility.

Dance Team

Our Dance Team class blends elements of cheer, jazz dance, hip hop dance, conditioning, basic tumbling, and stretching to create an upbeat, energetic class! This class is great for dancers and cheerleaders who want to improve their skills! Dance Team requires strength, control, sharpness, and body awareness to perfect this flashy style of dance. Formation changes and precise arm placement make pom exciting to practice, perform, and watch. Dancers will take time to condition and stretch, drill arm placement, and practice turns, leaps, jumps, and basic tumbling seen in cheer/dance team routines. SESD dancers are eligible to enroll in Dance Team classes at age 7.5 and are encouraged to enroll in Ballet classes and Jazz technique classes.

Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often “freestyle” (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions—colloquially referred to as “battles”. Crews, freestyling, and battles are identifiers of this style. Hip-hop dance can be a form of entertainment or a hobby. Either way, it’s a guaranteed way to have a fun work out!

Acro

Acro blends elements of dance technique and gymnastics for a dynamic class. Our Acro/Gymnastics classes include conditioning, stretching, and skills like handstands, cartwheels, walkovers, aerials, and more! We offer beginner-advanced levels starting at age 5. Students will learn the basics while working on strengthening and lengthening the muscles through conditioning and stretching in class. With consistent training, hard work, and dedication, students will be strong and flexible enough to learn more advanced skills!

Jazz and Tap

Jazz and tap are very similar-they are both very popular on Broadway! That’s why we combine Jazz and Tap for our level 2 dancers. Jazz dance is a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s individual style and originality. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns.

Modern

Dancers are welcome to begin our modern program at age 7.5. Our classes introduce dancers to the basic ideas of modern and acro dance including classic styles including Cunningham and Graham, as well as newer contemporary styles. Modern dance can be described as a free, expressive style of dancing that started in the early 20th century as a reaction (or rebellion) to classical ballet.

Ballet & Pointe

We are pleased to offer six levels of ballet classes, with our highest level including pointe work. Dancers aged 5.5+ are eligible to begin our Ballet/Tap/Jazz 1 class, where basic technique is introduced. Level 2 introduces a traditional barre warm up and basic combinations in the center and across the floor. More complex combinations are given in level 3-4, and dancers are encouraged to explore their personal artistry. Levels 5 & 6 are our highest and most difficult levels, which includes advanced steps and combinations, conditioning and deep stretching, and pointe work-by instructor invitation and permission.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz 1

Dancers aged 5.5+ are eligible to begin our Ballet/Tap/Jazz 1 class, where basic technique is introduced.

Fancy Flippers

Get a head start on building strength and flexibility! In addition to stretching and strengthening exercises, dancers in Fancy Flippers practice the building blocks of basic acro/tumbling skills. Dancers will begin the season practicing drills that eventually lead to skills like handstands, chest stands, cartwheels, and more! In addition to learning “the basics,” dancers learn how to incorporate their new “tricks” into actual choreography.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz 1

Perfect for dancers aged 5.5-6.5 or 7, BTJ1 builds upon the foundation set in previous levels, but beginners are welcome too! Level 1 is structured more closely to a traditional, or “big kid” class. During ballet warm up, the instructor explains and demonstrates the combination, then performs it with students. By the end of the seasons, dancers are usually able to practice without the instructors guidance! After warm up, we travel across the floor practicing various ballet skills–including some petite allegro (jumps!). We then stretch and learn a few jazz skills, then finish class with tap! Dancers in level 1 learn are absolutely still encouraged to explore their creativity through movement; we include various “games” and activities throughout class to encourage dancers to incorporate new skills they’ve learned in a fun and upbeat way!

Tiny Tumblers

Tiny Tumblers is open to ages 3.5-5; we will explore basic concepts of acro/gymnastics as well as some fundamentals of Modern dance! It will definitely be an action-packed 30 minutes!

Foundations

Our Foundations class is exactly what it sounds like–the class that begins to create a strong technical foundation in young dancers! Designed specifically for ages 4.5-5.5, Foundations will prepare dancers for the next level by introducing proper technique and placement as well as encourage them to explore their own creativity. Class begins with beginner ballet technique, stretching, and basic jazz technique. Dancers then travel across the floor to practice steps including skips, gallops, and turns–just like the “big girls!” At the end of class, dancers practice counting music and different rhythmic patterns during tap shoe time! Dancers also learn basic tap steps, eventually building up to create short tap combinations. Dancers enrolled in Foundations will learn to patiently wait their turn, encourage other dancers, and explore their artistic creativity through games and structured activities.

Creative Movement & First Steps

Our Creative Movement classes are designed specifically for your little dancer-to-be! For ages 2.5-4, we introduce basics of dance and teach valuable skills while we explore both free and structured movement. Dancers will learn how to take turns, encourage other students, and follow directions. Rhythm, counting, and basic ballet technique is introduced. There is never a dull moment in our Creative Movement classes!
