About Northern Plains Dance

Northern Plains Dance, located in Bismarck, North Dakota, has been a cornerstone of the community's artistic landscape since its founding in 1998. Originally established as a ballet training facility, the studio has evolved to offer a comprehensive and diverse dance education for students of all ages and experience levels. Our extensive curriculum encompasses foundational styles such as Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, Contemporary, and Modern dance, alongside social dance genres. Northern Plains Dance provides age-appropriate instruction through divisions catering to Preschool (ages 10 months - 4 years), Children's, Youth (ages 7-12), and Advanced (ages 12+ with experience) students. We foster a supportive environment that nurtures coordination, creativity, musicality, and a lifelong love of the arts, building strong technical skills while encouraging artistic expression and performance quality. Specialized programs include 'Boys In Motion' and a dedicated Homeschool Dance Program for ages 5-12, integrating arts and physical activity. Adults can explore a variety of programs, including weekly ballet, introductory tap, 'Recliners to Relevé' workshops, 'B.Y.O.' evenings, Wedding Dance Workshops, and the 'Aging Gracefully' program for seniors focusing on mobility and balance. Our faculty comprises highly qualified instructors with distinguished careers, including Director Hollis Mackintosh Heid, Associate Artistic Director Rosari Sarasvaty (ABT® Pedagogy expert), Taryn Johnson (Salsa), Andrea Byrd (classical ballet and jazz), Nia Lighter (NYC/LA dance scene experience), aerial dance specialist Katherine Hardy, and tap expert Kayla Rogler. Northern Plains Dance’s Tiny Tots series was created to introduce young audience members to the magical world of dance in a fun and accessible way. This original dance adaptation of the beloved classic The Little Engine That Could is specially created for children ages 3–5. With bright costumes, joyful movement, and a gentle narrator to guide the way, young audiences will follow the brave little engine as she faces a big mountain — and learns that believing in yourself makes all the difference.

Kindermusik On The Go!

Kindermusik invites children into a world of music, stories, and play that develops the whole child. Each class blends singing, moving, instrument play, and storytelling to spark imagination and creativity. Along the way, children strengthen early literacy, problem-solving, and social skills, all while building a joyful relationship with music that will last a lifetime.

Dance On the Go!

This high-energy class introduces children to the building blocks of dance while gently guiding them into the structure of a classroom. Young dancers practice motor coordination, memory, listening, and sharing skills as they explore creative movement. They’ll also begin learning the very first dance steps and positions of the feet and arms—giving them a strong foundation for future dance training.

Dance for PD®

Our Dance for PD® classes are inspired by the groundbreaking program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group. In these classes, professional dancers use their artistry to help people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers connect through movement, music, and imagination.

Aging Gracefully

Designed for adults ages 55 and up, these classes celebrate the freedom and fun of movement while supporting mobility, balance, and overall well-being. Each class offers a welcoming space to move at your own pace, enjoy great music, and connect with others who share your energy and zest for life.

At NPD’s Recliners to Relevé Workshop , there are no teens wearing Taylor Swift t-shirts with their legs wrapped around their heads. No intimidating crowded rooms where everyone already seems to know the warm-up.
