About The Movement Center School of Dance

Discover the joy of dance at The Movement Center School of Dance in Canal Winchester, Ohio. Catering to students of all ages, from 3 years old to adults, we offer a comprehensive dance education across a variety of disciplines. Our curriculum emphasizes proper technique, musicality, and performance readiness, fostering skill, creativity, and passion in a welcoming and supportive environment. Explore foundational elegance in Ballet, rhythmic precision in Tap, and dynamic energy in Jazz. For expressive outlets, Lyrical and Contemporary classes blend fluid movement with emotional depth, while vibrant Hip Hop classes, including dedicated sessions for boys, focus on fundamental movements and energetic choreography. Musical Theater is also a specialty. Our dedicated faculty includes Managing Director and Founder Sue Parker, whose extensive training spans industry greats. Nikki Parker brings expertise in tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop for our competitive company, alongside a stretch and conditioning program. Tessa Parker, a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatics Academy, leads our musical theater students, whose groups consistently earn choreography and entertainment awards. Mallory Dearwester, with training from The Edge Performing Arts Center, teaches jazz, hip-hop, tap, ballet, contemporary, lyrical, and musical theater. Former student and competition company member Jessica Umbleby also instructs a wide range of styles. Our professional facility features four classrooms with sprung floors to prevent injuries, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all dancers, including those in our competitive programs. Classes are conveniently offered Monday through Thursday.

Classes

Studio Program

Our studio program is designed as a recreational program for any student ages 3 to adult. Admission to this program requires no evaluation for placement. Students are placed according to age such as 3-5 year olds, 5-6 year olds, 7-8 year olds, 9-11 year olds, 12 and over, etc. Classes are also grouped by levels such as beginner, advanced, intermediate, etc. depending on the student’s previous training.

Competition Company Classes

Competition Company classes are 30 – 90 minutes each. There is a core curriculum which is required consisting of separate technique and choreography classes. Please call the studio for more information. LEARN MORE

Studio Program Classes

Studio Program classes are 30 – 45 minutes each. They cover warmup, application of basic techniques with progressions, and choreography. The student can choose which style/styles they want to learn. This program has one performance at the end of May LEARN MORE

Boys Hip-Hop

These classes are high energy, fun classes focusing on hip hop movements, body isolations, and beginner hip hop tricks like stalls, six step, etc. These are for boys only so, your son won’t be surrounded by pink tutus!

Hip-Hop

These classes teach the fundamentals of hip-hop movement. They are upbeat and high energy classes. Stretching, isolations, rhythms, musicality, and funky footwork will all be incorporated. Family Friendly Hip Hop music is utilized in all our classes.

Lyrical/Contemporary

An expressive form of dance with a strong ballet base pulling from jazz and modern as well. Lyrical/Contemporary focuses on execution, fluidity, flexibility, and control with emotional expression which relates to the music.

Jazz

A stylized contemporary form of dance that draws from a ballet foundation. Jazz has borrowed from many dance forms over the years to encompass a number of different styles using the widest variety of musical accompaniment. Students will learn body isolations, direction changes & patterns, turns, leaps, & jumps using fast-paced contemporary music.

Tap

Tap as we know it today has evolved from Irish and folk dancing, traditional mountain clogging as well as African-American and Latin cultures. Tap develops rhythm, musicality & coordination, mathematical & memorization skills. Students will learn rhythm patterns & beat sequences. They will be taught correct terminology & techniques for various striking styles as well as combinations that will teach various weight changes and patterns.

Ballet

The foundation of most other dance forms. Ballet will encourage proper posture, anatomical awareness, and correct body alignment. It will stretch & strengthen muscles, and improve balance. Ballet allows student to achieve better skills in jazz, lyrical, and other forms of dance. Pre-school age students will be presented a pre-ballet level class which will focus on basic skills & terminology. The majority of the class will be presented as center work with songs & exercises to fit their age. Older students will include traditional barre exercises with positions& terminology, as well as center work including, jumps, leaps, & turns.
