Classes

LYRICAL

Lyrical dance style has its primary basis in ballet, combining the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom and airier aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance. It is typically considered a sub-category of jazz and contemporary dance, the latter itself being an emerging category. Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic.

JAZZ TECHNIQUE

Jazz technique is a class that emphasizes proper body positioning while dancing. Its fundamental elements include core strengthening, flexibility, proper extension and alignment of the body, leaps, and turns. Each body movement is carefully critiqued for proper placement and execution. Jazz technique is recommended for all dance levels, taken in conjunction with Jazz, Hip Hop, and Ballet classes.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary dance has its roots in the Modern Dance genre. It is not a specific dance technique but a collection of methods developed from modern and post-modern dance and can take on many forms, including dance fusion, emergent dance, and revisionism. Unique movements, holds, turns and leaps allow dancers to express themselves. Intricate arm and leg movements form shapes with the body that are not typically used in any other dance genre. Because of its free flowing movement, slow, emotional music is most often used. Contemporary is only offered for intermediate to advanced students.

JAZZ

Jazz is a dance form derived from a broad range of dance styles, including syncopated rhythm and improvisation that originated from African American vernacular dance. In the 1950's, a new genre of jazz dance —modern jazz— emerged, with roots in Caribbean traditional dance. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique movements, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.

TAP

Tap is the form of dance that focuses on foot timing, rhythm, and speed. Tap technique is taught from Al Gilbert's syllabus and tested throughout the dance season. Strength and flexibility are emphasized to master this dance form. Techniques are learned during warm up, center, and across the floor training. Tap is available for all dance levels.

HIP HOP

Hip hop is a form of dance to hip hop music, rooted from the hip hop culture of freestyle and old school breaking. Hip Hop encompasses choreographed movements that are energetic, synchronized, and performed. It is a freedom of movements, adding personality, originality, and swag. Hip Hop is taught at all levels for each age bracket, including 2 to 5, 6 to 10 years old, 10 to 13 years old, 13+, and adults.

BALLET/JAZZ/TAP

The beginner combo classes are intended for ages 5 to 7. Students are introduced to elementary ballet positions, terms, and ballet class etiquette, including basic dance technique skills. As for Tap and Jazz, the classes are an introduction to expanded basic tap and jazz steps, danced to today's music. Students must be able to spend 45 minutes to 1 hour in a structured class for each type of instruction.

MOMMY & ME/LITTLE DIVAS & DIVOS

Classes are designed to introduce young children to the rhythm of movement by developing motor skills and memory. This preschool age curriculum is structured to bring fun and joy into each child as they enter into the world of dance. Focusing on self- esteem, coordination, balance, flexibility, and strength in combination with dance and exercises with music. We focus on rhythm, movement, coordination, memory and introduction to preschool beginner ballet.
