About Eugene Modern Dance

Eugene Modern Dance, located in Eugene, Oregon, is a vibrant center dedicated to dance, creativity, and healing, founded in the 1990s by Peggy Soomil. With over 50 years of experience as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher, Soomil brings an unparalleled depth of knowledge, honed through decades of artistic exploration and formal education at institutions like The Juilliard School and UCLA. Her extensive training includes studying with pioneers of Modern Dance such as Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Merce Cunningham, and Anna Sokolow, as well as Ballet under Alfredo Corvino Ceccetti and figures like Anthony Tudor and Margaret Black. Before establishing Eugene Modern Dance, Soomil, a former member of the renowned Anna Sokolow Dance Company, shared her expertise across the United States, teaching and choreographing at various academic and artistic institutions, including The Juilliard School and UCLA. Eugene Modern Dance offers a rich tapestry of dance education, embodying a legacy of modern dance innovation. The studio provides a supportive environment where individuals can improve their technique, explore new movement possibilities, and create and perform dance projects. Offerings include foundational techniques in modern and ballet, with a particular emphasis on Soomil's meticulously honed styles, influenced by her vast choreographic output. While the studio highlights a "Luigi Jazz Class Sampler" focused on classic jazz dance technique, emphasizing style, grace, and sensuality, its mission extends to broader dance exploration, fostering artistic growth for dancers, teachers, and artists of all levels. Eugene Modern Dance welcomes all to expand their craft and deepen their connection to movement.
