About Deborah Messinger School of Dance

Discover the joy of movement at Deborah Messinger School of Dance, a cornerstone of dance education in Troutdale, Oregon, with over 51 years of experience. Founded by seasoned dancer Deborah Messinger-Seamster, who danced with the San Francisco Ballet Co. and toured extensively in jazz and tap variety shows, the studio cultivates a passion for dance across a wide array of genres for students of all ages, from toddlers as young as two through adults. Our comprehensive program offers classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Modern, Contemporary, Ballroom, Musical Theater, and Acrobatics, alongside dedicated Barre sessions and engaging "123 Dance with Me" classes for our youngest learners. For older students, we facilitate sampling various dance forms and offer pathways to becoming performing group and competitive dancers. Under the guidance of experienced instructors like Tara Marshall and Keagan O'Toole, celebrated for her hip-hop expertise and coaching the David Douglas High School Dance Team, students develop technical skill, creativity, and confidence. We prioritize a safe and supportive learning environment with a low student-teacher ratio and injury-preventing sprung floating wood floors. DMSD emphasizes instilling life skills like responsibility, punctuality, and respect, fostering a positive, family-oriented atmosphere. Our competitive teams have achieved top awards at local and regional competitions, offering opportunities for students seeking recreation, exercise, or a career in dance.

Dance Classes

See our dancers in action! Teaching the love of dance to your child in a happy, healthy and safe environment. Proudly a non-competitive, non-examination, performance based studio.

Tap (8 to 12 olds) & (12+ Teen / Adults)

We teach all styles of tap from the vaudeville routines with top hats & canes, through the new modern rhythm tap which is done to some pieces of modern rock-type music (the “edited” versions, of course). Tap teaches balance, speed & musicality.

Jazz (8 to 12 olds) & (12+ Teen / Adults)

This is considered a good form of “basic dance”. It's high energy. It teaches full body movement, stage presence, flexibility and control. This has nothing to with “jazz” style music. It’s a fun form of dance that’s very popular these days because it’s usually done to the songs that you listen to on the radio. Routines can be any style from Broadway shows, to oldies, to today’s most popular bands. Students of jazz are strongly encouraged to take a ballet class simultaneously.

Lyrical

Combining elements of both ballet & jazz, this class is designed for dancers looking to expand their dance knowledge by connecting their movements and emotions to music. A ballet class is required simultaneously.

Hip-Hop

If you like a good workout done in a funky hip-hop style of dancing to all the latest music (“edited”, of course), then this class is for you! Instructors study all the latest “MTV video moves” & attend many seminars to keep up on all the most current material! These classes are lots of fun!! The 5-7 yr olds are in a class called "Hippity Hop" with age-appropriate music as they jump, shake & pop!

Ballet/PrePointe

Traditional Classical ballet is taught for 6 yr olds & up. Students will learn terminology of ballet in French, correct body alignment and develop a love for the most graceful living art. Ballet is the basis of most all dance forms and is a pre-requisite for anyone serious about the art of dance. At about 12 yrs old, students may advance to adding a pointe class by instructor invitation.

Tumbling II & III

This class is for students who already have a forward roll and stand it up, ten second bridge, cartwheel and running cartwheel, as well as an unassisted or lightly assisted backbend. This class will work on: - Varieties of cartwheels - Backbends to standing up - Handstand bridges - Backbend kickovers

Tumbling I

This class is for those with little or no prior experience in tumbling, and do not yet have a good cartwheel. This class will work on: - Forward and backward rolls - Cartwheels - Roundoffs - Bridges - Handstands - Backbends

Hippity Hop

A 45-minute structured hip hop class. Our class provides a structured method of learning various Hip Hop dance movements in a fun-filled and vibrant class environment. The resulting outcome is an energetic class that not only teaches you Hip Hop movements and technique, but also instills rhythm and precision in your muscle memory.

Ballet/Tap/Jazz

This class continues the knowledge of ballet and tap, and introduces jazz. The jazz technique offers more complicated footwork while enjoying high energy pop songs.
