Defying Gravity School of Dance, located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, offers a comprehensive dance education for students of all ages, from toddlers as young as 18 months to experienced dancers. The studio cultivates a love for movement and artistic expression through a diverse range of technique classes including Acrobatics, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz, Lyrical, and Tap. Defying Gravity is committed to building a strong technical foundation, emphasizing proper technique, coordination, and self-discipline while fostering strength, stamina, and flexibility. The experienced faculty includes Artistic Director Nicole Bibby, alongside instructors Jamie Giusti, Karen Pare, Grace Bressner, Lauren Difede, Massiel Valderrama, Kelly Cannone, Flavia Gusmao, Julissa Guzman, Lindsey Corrado, and Hannah Teixeira, each bringing unique expertise. Beyond regular classes, the studio nurtures talent through its elite DGRI Dance Company, a competitive team for dancers aged 4 to 18. Company members prepare for annual competition seasons, attend conventions, and perform nationally, building technical proficiency, confidence, and lasting friendships. Defying Gravity also offers private lessons, master classes, birthday parties, summer sessions, and camps, providing inspiring and cutting-edge instruction. Stretching & Toning

Strong, lean muscles are a critical foundation to any dance style and can help prevent injury. These classes are designed to build strength, stamina, and flexibility that will take your dance training to the next level.

Contemporary / Lyrical

This expressive dance form combines ballet and jazz roots. Dancers are able to show emotion in their dancing. Students learn smooth and dynamic dance movements that connect throughout the dance.

Hip Hop

This dance form focuses on the current “street style” of dance. The dancer will learn high energy routines demonstrating various styles and rhythms.

Tap

This dance form involves creating rhythmic sounds with the feet. Students learn timing, patterns, and intricate foot movements.

Jazz

This class includes strength, flexibility and conditioning technique and progressions including turns, kicks and leaps.

Ballet

Students learn proper technique through this classical and theatrical dance form. Proper placement of body, legs, and arms are learned. Children are taught self-discipline as well as technique and coordination. Advanced levels work to achieve strength and grace through bar and floor work.

Acrobats

This class involves basic tumbling skills. The dancer will work to develop muscle coordination and strength through stationary exercises and tumbling floor passes.

Little Twirlers

Children learn basic Jazz & Tap form and movements through music, shapes, props, & games.
