About Denton Dance Conservatory

Denton Dance Conservatory (DDC), located in Denton, Texas, has been a premier destination for dance education since its founding in 1988 by Owner/Director Lisa Racina-Torre. Celebrating over 35 years of service, DDC offers a nurturing environment for dancers of all ages, from toddlers as young as two to adults, fostering a lifelong love and respect for dance through positive reinforcement. The conservatory's robust curriculum features a classical ballet program developed by Lisa Racina, based on Vaganova and Cecchetti techniques, alongside a highly regarded Modern dance program designed for strength, technical knowledge, flexibility, and creativity. Students can explore a diverse range of genuine dance styles, including Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary. DDC boasts a distinguished faculty, including Lisa Racina-Torre (BFA in Ballet from TCU), Michelle Clow Fitzpatrick (experience from LA's performing arts scene), Fiona Piper (trained at the Royal Ballet Upper School), Amber Kellogg (passionate Tap instructor), and Lillie Anderson (risen through the studio and Denton City Contemporary Ballet). The studio provides numerous performance opportunities, such as the annual Recital Showcase, Racina's holiday ballet "A Gift for Emma" presented by The Denton City Contemporary Ballet and the youth company, Denton Youth City Ballet, and performances at the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival. DDC also offers DANCEcamps and an Assistant Teacher Training Program, demonstrating a commitment to comprehensive dance development and community engagement. An in-house "Dancewear Boutique" equips dancers with necessary apparel. DDC welcomes new students throughout the year, space permitting, and offers flexible 6-week sessions.

Master Classes

Hip Hop

Hip Hop focuses on rhythm, syncopation and stage presence. Derived from a combination of jazz funk and street jazz, this style of dance requires high energy, attention to detail and an understanding of complex rhythms. Isolations, popping, & free-style movement will all be a focus of this athletic and energetic dance style. Dancers will practice and perform to age appropriate music, wearing age appropriate costumes. These classes will perform in the end of the year Recital Showcase.

Contemporary dance

Contemporary dance classes at DDC are a combined curriculum of modern and lyrical, often utilizing improvisation, floor-work, partnering and performing in bare feet. Contemporary as a dance style in itself is defined, in part, as a fusion of ballet and jazz, demanding technical skill, musicality and an expression of emotion. A solid, ballet-based technique, proper placement and bodily alignment are essential components. At least three years of ballet training are required. These classes will automatically perform in DDC’s annual holiday production, “A Gift for Emma,” as well as the year end Recital Showcase.

Tap

Tap classes are offered to students ages 4 and up and focus on rhythm, musicality and timing. All classes begin with an energetic warm-up, across the floor exercises and combinations. Building on earlier levels where dancers focus on clarity of sounds, increasing speed, and working with varying dynamics, musicality, and history, our advanced tap dancers (Levels V/VI) are challenged through improvisational exercises, intricate rhythms and footwork. These classes will perform to age appropriate music in the end of the year Recital Showcase.

Jazz

Jazz classes explore traditional, Broadway, lyrical, and contemporary styles in a fun, energetic atmosphere to age appropriate music. Classes begin with a warm-up that stresses technique, flexibility, coordination and strength, followed by progressions across the floor, center work and combinations. Advanced classes (Levels VI and VII) emphasize quality of movement in addition to perfecting technique, performance skills and a variety of styles. Great effort is made to ensure that the dancers are costumed appropriately for the style, and age. These classes will perform in the end of the year Recital Showcase.

Ballet

Twice a week class with additional pointe class built upon Levels I thru VI. Most of these dancers have advanced through membership in DDC’s resident dance company, Denton City Contemporary Ballet, and/or DDC’s Competitive company. Dancers are also encouraged to add an additional ballet technique class, and dance disciplines like Jazz and Contemporary in order to increase their marketability in the professional world. Advanced Ballet Technique for dancers with a minimum of 6 years previous ballet training, and minimum 4 years “en pointe.” This class will automatically perform in the year end Recital Showcase.

Intermediate classes (Level IV and V) focus on body placement and proper technique, stretching and development of skills. Great effort is made to ensure that the dancers are costumed appropriately for the style, and age. These classes will perform in the end of the year Recital Showcase.

Ballet

Twice a week class building on the foundations taught in the younger levels, dancers continue to work on placement, flexibility, vocabulary, and use of correct turn-out. Barre exercises increase in length and tempo and the use of “epaulement” and “port de bras” is emphasized. Centre “facings” are added in the centre, as well as increased level of jumps. Strengthening exercises “en releve” are added in order to prepare for solid pirouettes. Female dancers may be invited to attend the Pre-Pointe class on Fridays. This class will automatically perform in DDC’s annual holiday production, “A Gift for Emma,” as well as the year end Recital Showcase.

Tap

Tap classes are offered to students ages 4 and up and focus on rhythm, musicality and timing. All classes begin with an energetic warm-up, across the floor exercises and combinations. Our beginner students (Levels I thru III) explore the fundamental steps of tap dance, learn tap terminology and develop the ability to maintain correct body placement.

Jazz

Jazz classes explore traditional, Broadway, lyrical, and contemporary styles in a fun, energetic atmosphere to age appropriate music. Classes begin with a warm-up that stresses technique, flexibility, coordination and strength, followed by progressions across the floor, center work and combinations. Beginner students (Levels I thru III) learn fundamental jazz steps and basic vocabulary through across the floor exercises and simple combinations.

Ballet Level III

Ballet Level III is the first time dancers are required to attend twice a week. This level creates a bridge to assist a student’s transition from the recreational combo classes into a more structured class environment. They are introduced to an increased level of formal training consisting of barre and centre work. The posture, placement and comportment of classical ballet will be emphasized. The practice exercises introduced at this level for alignment, flexibility, and coordination will develop a strong foundation of physical and cognitive understanding necessary for Classical Ballet training. This class will automatically perform in DDC’s annual holiday production, “A Gift for Emma,” as well as the year end Recital Showcase.

Mini Hip Hop

Mini Hip Hop is age appropriate, fun, and funky! This class is designed to give beginning hip hoppers basic tools for learning dance combinations; rhythm, coordination, memorization skills & physical fitness are all benefits of this class!

Jazz

The Jazz part of this combo class is the very beginning level of Jazz at DDC. Young dancers are taught that jazz technique is based on ballet. Basic isolations of the upper body, as well as the turned in style of jazz are taught, along with the grounded and linear style of jazz. Young dancers will enjoy dancing to age appropriate music, learning the fast/sharp/explosive movement that differentiates jazz from ballet. These classes also perform in DDC’s annual holiday production, “A Gift for Emma.”

Tap

Tap tempos increase, and combinations start to become a bit more complicated. These dancers will perform both a Ballet and a Tap piece in DDC’s annual Recital Showcase.

Ballet Level II

Ballet Level II is the first time dancers use the ballet barre. Facing the barre, young dancers are taught the “ballet check-list” in order to introduce correct placement, stretched knees, and a formality to the art form. Dancers start to memorize the combinations instead of imitating the teacher, and perform with more independence.
