About Ballet San Antonio

Ballet San Antonio, located in the vibrant city of San Antonio, Texas, is the city's sole professional ballet company, established in 1985 and serving as a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Comprising 26 professional dancers, the company enriches the cultural landscape of South Texas with world-class performances, including beloved productions like "Cinderella," "Giselle," and their signature annual "The Nutcracker," alongside two other premiere productions each season. Ballet San Antonio is deeply committed to dance education through its School of BSA, led by Artistic Director Rafael Ferreras, School Director Harald Uwe Kern, and Assistant Artistic Coordinator Vianca Palacios. The school offers comprehensive training for all skill levels, from absolute beginners to experienced performers, with many company dancers serving as instructors, such as Britt Lorraine and Julia Davies. The curriculum emphasizes the art of ballet, enhancing fitness and fostering self-expression, and extends to diverse dance forms including Modern and Contemporary styles. Beyond regular adult classes, which include a dedicated Adult Beginner Ballet and a Thursday Adult Modern session, the studio offers an immersive three-week Summer Intensive (June 7th-28th) focused on advanced training in Technique, Pointe, Men's Class, Partnering, Character, and Variations. Classes

Wrens (Ages 4-5)

Wrens will dive deeper into the rhythm, and locomotor movements, and expand their imagination. In this level students are introduced to muscle identification, posture awareness, and beginning ballet concepts. Wrens meet once a week for 1 hour.

Monday, Saturday 5:00 pm, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm, 10:00 am
Hummingbirds (Ages 3-4)

Students in this level are introduced to the art of dance through movement exploration, creative imagery, props, and musical identification. This is the first class dancers are independent of their parent or caregiver. Hummingbirds meet once a week for 1 hour.

Level 1

The first level of the Pre-Professional Division, Level 1 presents the building blocks of a ballet class structure and deepens the ballet vocabulary. This class aims to strengthen technique, stamina, and concentration for beginning ballet students. Level 1 meets twice a week for 1 hour.

Level 5

Level 5 technique continues to build with more demanding material and advancing pointe work. Level 5 meets four times a week for 1.5-2 hours depending on the day with an optional Saturday class. Modern and Pointe classes are also offered for students at this level.

Level 6-7

Level 6-7 focus technique and the vocabulary deepens, with an emphasis placed on refining and growing pointe work execution with extended class times. Level 6-7 meet five times a week for 1.5-2 hours. Pointe and Repertoire classes are also offered and encouraged for students at this level.

Modern Class

Open to Pre-Professional Division students in Levels 4-7, Modern classes will incorporate many of the foundations of modern dance technique, including suspension and release, fall and recovery, the use of momentum and connecting breath with movement. Dancers will explore new ways of moving in combinations, floor work and improvisation. These classes meet once a week on Saturday for 1 hour.

Dance with Me 2+

Dance with Me 2+ is a fun and bonding dance class for students age 2, and their parent or caregiver. This class introduces young dancers to the dance studio through creative movement, rhythm, musicality, and social skills. Dance with Me 2+ meets once a week for 45 minutes.

Saturday 9:00 am - 9:45 am
Level 2

Level 2 builds on the skills and vocabulary mastered in Level 1, with class time extending by 15 minutes. Added emphasis is placed on posture, placement, and material retention. Level 2 meets twice a week for 1.25 hours.

Tuesday, Friday 5:00 pm - 6:15 pm
Level 4

Level 4 classes aim to strengthen technique, further expand vocabulary, and build strength in ankles and feet with Pre-Pointe. Pointe work is introduced at this level in the Spring Session after a physical assesment. Level 4 meets three times a week for 1.5 hours with an optional Saturday class. Modern classes are required and included as part of the tuition when enrolling in this class.

Level 3

Level 3 builds on the skills and vocabulary mastered in prior levels, now attending more and with extended class times. Students are introduced to more challenging material, and higher demand is placed on execution of existing technique. Level 3 meets three times a week for 1.5 hours.

Open to all Boys in the Pre-Professional Division from Levels 5 and up. Focusing on strength, line, discipline, and quality of movement with an instructor specialized in male technique.

Owls (Ages 6-7)

Owls grow the ballet vocabulary and expand on the ballet class structure, with the barre introduced in the Spring. Creativity and deepening musical understanding continue to be explored. Owls meet once a week for 1 hour.

Robins (Ages 5-6)

Robins will further expand on the students ’creative exploration, strength building, teamwork, and discipline. The building blocks of basic ballet vocabulary and structure are introduced. Robins meet once a week for 1 hour.
