About Nupur Center of Performing Arts

Nupur Center of Performing Arts, located in Sugar Land, Texas, is a distinguished institution dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and development of exceptional Indian classical and folk dances. Founded with a unique vision by Mrs. Medinee (Rupa) Aranke, who holds a BFA and MFA in Bharatanatyam and nearly 30 years of teaching experience, the center honors the rich legacy passed down by esteemed gurus and masters. Mrs. Aranke, drawing from her extensive training in Mumbai, leads the faculty, including assisting instructor Tanuja Sahasrabudhe, who brings passion for Indian classical, folk, and Bollywood dancing. Nupur Center offers comprehensive training across various levels, from Introductory Beginner to Advanced, delving into the intricacies of dance posture, hand gestures (hastas), footwork (pada bheda), and rhythmic cycles (taal). Students explore the highly stylized grace and intricate beauty of Bharatanatyam, while also engaging with folk dances that offer a vibrant exploration of India's cultural landscape and the traditions of different regions. The Semi Classical program loosens traditional structures, incorporating folk steps and popular cinema music. While classical Indian dance is a core focus, foundational Western styles are also indicated. The curriculum is designed to be both fun and challenging, fostering technical excellence and the holistic development of students, aiming for a fusion of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. Students gain opportunities to showcase talents in cultural events and can be examined by the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. The studio prioritizes personalized attention in a supportive atmosphere, nurturing artistry, performance skills, and a strong work ethic applicable to all life pursuits, aiming to educate, foster, and enrich global communities.

Bharatanatyam

Bhataranatyam is one of the oldest forms of Indian classical dance which Originated in southern state of Tamilnadu, India. It is extremely traditional and is known for its highly stylized grace, beauty & purity. It is a deeply spiritual dance form which has religion as its basic sentiment. It uplifts the dancer & her audience to a higher level of spiritual consciousness. Anyone who witnesses a high class classical dance performance will be convinced that it is a model of synchronized arts with many shades and elements of beauty, pure dance patterns of endless variety, symbolic hand gestures & changing facial expressions – all in the background of melodious vocal & instrumental music. The greatest blessing of dance is its ability to control the mind. The feet keeping to rhythm, hands expressing gestures, eyes following the hands, the ears listening to melodious music leads to the mind achieving concentration & clarity. The spectator watching the performance has his mind freed from distractions. A good classical dance performance can lift both the dancer & the spectator to high spiritual levels. The young dancers of today have to realize that practicing classical dance can lead to the three-fold fusion of Mental, Physical & Spiritual well being. One has to begin early and learn for many years before reaching a devout understanding of this Art.
