About Tiny Dancers

Tiny Dancers, located in Alexandria, Virginia, has been a cornerstone of dance education for young children since its founding in 2001 by studio owner Donna Rathe. This family-owned studio is dedicated to fostering a lifelong love for dance through a nurturing and joyful, non-competitive experience for over 800 young dancers. Our core philosophy emphasizes personalized instruction in small class sizes, focusing on technical excellence, agility, grace, and coordination, while considering both the physical and emotional development of each child. Our instructors, selected for their dance expertise and passion for teaching children, are trained in the unique Tiny Dancers methodology, empowering students with self-confidence and poise. Tiny Dancers offers a diverse curriculum for ages 2-12. The 'Wiggletoes' program (ages 2-3) invites a caregiver to join in fundamental movement, cognitive, and social development. For ages 3-6, our Tiny Dancers™ program (3-5) introduces ballet with creative storytelling, while Pre-Ballet (age 5) builds on a structured format. Coordination and body awareness are cultivated in Tiny Tappers and Tiny Hip-Hop (ages 4-6). Tiny Broadway™ (ages 4-5) ignites a passion for musical theater, blending singing, dancing, and acting. For older students (ages 6-12), we offer comprehensive Ballet, dynamic Tap and Jazz programs, and an engaging Musical Theater class that fuses singing, dancing, and acting, exploring beloved musical numbers. Beyond our main studios, Tiny Dancers extends its reach to community centers, preschools, and private academies across Northern Virginia. We also offer a virtual dance program, reaching dancers nationwide since March 2020.

Wiggletoes

We recognize that with the littlest ones, they may be too young to start an organized program — even with a parent, so we have a more relaxed policy. Refunds for unused classes will be given if withdrawal is within 48 hours of your child’s first class. After that, tuition credits may be applied toward future classes. Musical Theater

Musical Theater is the perfect combination of singing, dancing and acting for your Broadway bound star. Performers will study and perform songs and scenes from classic Rodgers and Hammerstein to the hit ' Hairspray' , and everything in between! Every class includes vocal and dance warm-ups in addition to acting exercises and even stage directions! Students will explore different acting techniques and characterization methods while learning about the history of this uniquely American form of entertainment, and their confidence will soar when they get the chance to shine in front of their classmates and at home.

Tap and Jazz

At Tiny Dancers, we build on the basics taught in Tiny Tappers and Tiny Hip-hop and continue to focus on refining technique and building skill levels in these dance forms. Less regimented than ballet, our tap and jazz program is great for both boys and girls to let their hair down and develop contemporary dance skills while engaging in vigorous exercise. Cognitive sequencing and coordination are enhanced through exciting dance routines that are fun, challenging and allow for creative self-expression.

Ballet

Our ballet program focuses on the mastery of dance fundamentals, individual expression and performance quality. Comprehensive classes provide the serious ballet student with a traditional approach to classical ballet through the exploration of choreography and performance technique.

Tiny Broadway

Tiny Broadway™ is a great way to introduce performers ages 4-5 to the excitement of musical theater! Students will love bringing all the fun of singing, dancing and acting together in one class. Each month will focus on a different musical, ranging from the classic 'Sound of Music' to more contemporary hits like 'Seussica l' and 'Hairspray '! Each class will include vocal warm ups and acting exercises in addition to teaching basic musical theater choreography. Tiny Broadway also introduces breath support, vocal projection, diction, stage direction and improvisation in a fun and age appropriate way. Props and costume pieces will enhance the experience as the future stars bring the musical to life!

Tiny Tappers and Tiny Hip Hop

Tiny Tappers and Tiny Hip-Hop (jazz) classes are choreographed for children ages 4-6. Basic techniques of each discipline are introduced and refined as the students learn coordination and body awareness. For those dancers taking tap or jazz in addition to ballet, the programs serve to complement each other and reinforce skills learned in each class. Costumes and props are used as appropriate.

Pre-Ballet

Our Pre-Ballet class is designed as a transition between our Tiny Dancers classes that include our story boxes and costumes into a structured 45-minute ballet class. Dancers will start the year with warm up songs, ballet barre, across the floor, stories, and costumes and by the end of the year will be following a traditional ballet class format of ballet barre, center exercises, across the floor, and more! In this important year, dancers begin to explore foundational ballet technique with more focus and complexity, while still enjoying the playful and creative elements they love.

Tiny Dancers

Tiny Dancers™ classes are designed for girls and boys, ages 3-5 as an introduction to ballet. This curriculum incorporates classical ballet technique and includes our exquisite, custom-made costumes and creative story-dance interpretations. The classes start with a ballet warm up to strengthen and stretch the muscles. We use French terminology for the steps and positions, but each one is explained at an age-appropriate level, often incorporating animal imagery and familiar movements. For example, in ballet, the French term chassé means 'to chase'. We use the terminology, but then explain that it's very much like a gallop that many children are already familiar with. The students can become horses or unicorns as they chassé around the studio. We then incorporate the new step into our story interpretations with choreography developed to emphasize newly learned material and reinforce previously learned lessons.

Wiggletoes

A toddler program available exclusively at Tiny Dancers. For dancers ages 2-3, 'Wiggletoes' is designed to be shared with a parent, grandparent or other adult. Most toddlers are not quite ready to separate at this age, so we've developed a program to address this developmental stage and create a fun learning and bonding experience. Each class starts with activities such as bending, stretching and swaying and progresses to loco-motor movements including marching, galloping and jumping. We also focus cognitive elements such as learning to follow directions. social and behavioral development, interacting with others and dancing as part of a group. As we build a strong dance foundation, your toddler will gain confidence and improve coordination in a relaxed and fun environment within their comfort zone. Fall and winter session students will be given priority registration for the following session.
