About Ballet Squared

Ballet Squared, located in Southside, Alabama, offers a comprehensive dance education for students of all ages, blending classical training with contemporary innovation. Under the artistic direction of Caitlin Costner, the studio's philosophy, inspired by 'Ballet²', aims to exponentially improve dancers through a perfect fusion of fundamental principles and modern approaches. Caitlin brings extensive experience from esteemed institutions like the Joffrey Ballet School, Prima Ballerina DeeDee Leda, Alabama Ballet, and the Nashville Ballet, with expertise in classical ballet (including Vaganova style), jazz, and modern dance. Her performing credits include George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty with the Alabama Ballet Company, and she further honed her skills in New York City at Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, and Peridance Capezio Center. Ballet Squared provides specialized classes in Ballet, Contemporary Ballet, Modern, and Jazz. Creative Movement (ages 3-4) introduces the youngest dancers to fundamental elements. The curriculum progresses through Pre-Ballet and Beginner Ballet, building foundational technique, posture, and performance skills. Intermediate and Advanced Ballet classes emphasize complex sequences, barre work, and body alignment. Contemporary Ballet merges classical ballet with modern dance for greater freedom of movement. The Modern dance program focuses on core strength, flexibility, and elemental concepts of space, time, and force. Jazz classes, with Jazz 1 for ages 8-12 and Jazz 2 for ages 13+, introduce foundational jazz elements including strong centers, parallel hips, angular shapes, leaps, turns, and rapid directional changes. Ballet Squared is dedicated to nurturing young dancers, with Caitlin investing her integrity and energy into their development, sculpting visible, momentary art through movement. Students are offered a curated selection of genuine dance styles, focusing on developing strong technical skills in a nurturing environment, catering to those seeking both a deep understanding of core dance principles and the excitement of evolving artistic expression.

Classes

Jazz 1 / Jazz 2

Dancers start by learning jazz foundations, such as strong/low center, parallel hips, angular shapes. Jazz elements include leaps, turns, splits, isolations, and rapid directional changes. This class begins with a warm-up to develop strength and flexibility followed by center work and progressions across the floor.

Modern

Dancers will focus on contractions, spirals, basic floor work, and elemental concepts of space, time and force. They will also build core strength and flexibility

Contemporary Ballet

Contemporary ballet is a genre of dance that incorporates elements of classical ballet and modern dance. It combines classical ballet with classical pointe work as well, but allows greater range of movement of the upper body and is not constrained to the rigorously defined body lines and forms found in traditional, classical ballet.

Advanced Ballet
By Placement

This class will focus on ballet technique through the execution of barre work, center, and across the floor. Students will have a clear understanding of body alignment as well as carriage of upper body, and flexibility.

Intermediate Ballet
By Placement

Dancers execute more complicated sequences and barre exercises with greater speed and accuracy and are expected to coordinate arm and leg movements smoothly

Beginner Ballet

Students learn basic ballet technique, including turn-out and posture, while building confidence and learning performance skills. This class begins to transition young dancers into the full structure of a standard ballet class with increased exercises and vocabulary

Pre-Ballet

Students are introduced to dance elements such as level, direction, and shape; and practice self-control as they follow directions, take turns, and practice following along and leading others.

Creative Movement

Thursdays 3:30 - 4:15
