A buddy in dance class might assist a child in a wheelchair by pushing the wheelchair while the child with special needs performs dance moves with her arms. Buddies do attend a brief workshop to give them insight into some of the special needs they might encounter.

Zoe is currently a sophomore at Henderson State University majoring in special education after finding a passion of working with special needs children through volunteering in the I Can! Dance class. She has volunteered with I Can! Dance for as long as she can remember and has taught classes at the East End location for the past two years.

I CAN! Dance class

I CAN! Dance class began when 2- year-old Katie Mayberry – born with spina bifida and mobile through the use of a wheelchair – asked her mother if she could take a dance class like her big sister, Ellie. Based on the Bible verse from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” the first class began in 2005 with two students, both in wheelchairs. It has now grown to nine full classes. Each class has approximately ten children, ages four to adult, with disabilities including spina bifida, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other developmental delays. The classes also include dancing “Buddies.”
