Students begin with a structured warm up and stretch. Across the floor and center exercises range from formal codified techniques (Graham, Horton, O’Donnell) to improvisational. We begin to discuss conceptual ideas about moving through space and how to utilize dynamics. Combinations are lengthy and incorporate the dancers technique and coordination as well as artistic capabilities. Students are strongly urged to begin finding their own “voice.” They should begin discovering how they like to move. Some choreography is left open ended so that experimentation is welcome. As dancers advance we begin using more complicated music (mixed meter, multiple time signatures) students also begin composition exercises like “kinetic response” “group think” and improvisation.
