About South Georgia Ballet

South Georgia Ballet, located in Thomasville, Georgia, is a premier dance institution founded in 1998, dedicated to enriching lives through the joy of classical dance and providing comprehensive dance education. Under the Executive, Artistic Director and Outreach Education Director Melissa June, and guided by a passionate faculty including Ashley Adams, Shelley Kines, Daphne Tuten, Jenna Jones, Riann Duggan, Lauren Kelly Routt, and Sophi Sampson, the studio offers a diverse range of disciplines for aspiring artists. At its core, South Georgia Ballet emphasizes professional instruction in classical ballet, adhering to the Vaganova syllabus to cultivate versatile, strong, and artistic dancers. Programs guide students from ages 2 to 18 through progressively challenging levels, including specialized pointe and pre-pointe training. Beyond ballet, students can explore tap (Kindergarten-graduation), contemporary (7th grade and up, blending modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet), jazz (4th grade upwards), musical theater, hip hop, and acrobatics. The studio fosters a love for high-quality dance experiences with advanced training for company dancers aged 9-18, exposing them to classical repertory and challenging performance opportunities. The company season features three annual productions, including "The Nutcracker," a "Fuse" collaborative performance, and an original spring ballet. South Georgia Ballet is also committed to community outreach through programs like Step UP! dance classes, the Backstage Experience, and ArtReach. They offer "Special Steps," a specialized class for students with special needs, and provide full scholarships for foster care students, ensuring inclusivity and celebrating the pride of performance for all.

Primary/Pre-Primary Jazz

Jazz dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Jazz also has its own movement vocabulary ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Dancers often enjoy the freedom of expression that this class offers.

Pre-Company

Pre-company was designed for the 2nd-5th grade dancer who wishes to join SGB’s company. This class focuses on the fundamentals of ballet including proper execution of steps, alignment, musicality, discipline, linking learned steps together, and terminology. This class is designed for the dancer who is extremely focused and goal-oriented. It bridges the gap of information for the beginner student into the rigors of Company expectations and makes the transition seamless for the dancer and teacher.

Acrobatics

Acrobatics is like gymnastics but without the apparatuses. Classes will focus on flexibility and tumbling skills as they are applied to dance. Learned skills include Somersaults, cartwheels, chest stands, backbends, walkovers, round-offs, chest rolls, front and back handsprings. tucks, layouts, ariels, etc. These skills greatly benefit the dancer as they age and have a demand for “extra” skills in their choreography.

Pre-Pointe & Pointe

Pointe is offered to a student when they have shown strength, proficiency in ballet, control of turnout, and the focus needed to learn how to dance en pointe. This class will work on general readiness of the body, alignment, and ankle strength. Simple and repetitive movements will be executed to gain the control needed for technical proficiency. The first exercises at the barre are usually relevés and échappés.[8] When the student is comfortable executing these steps on both feet and sufficiently strong, steps ending on one en pointe foot are introduced such as pas de bourrée and retiré. Once introduced, dancers are required to continue their pointe work through graduation.

Jazz

Jazz dance combines techniques of classical ballet and modern dance with the current forms of popular dance. Jazz also has its own movement vocabulary ranging from the isolation of certain body parts to the movement of the entire body with the accents of musical rhythms. This jazz class is a part of the combo classes required from 4th grade through 12th grade. We do offer jazz as an option for children in 2nd and 3rd grade.

Contemporary at this level will focus on more the modern technique to prepare students for collegiate level dance. The contemporary elective is offered for students from 2nd grade through 6th grade as an option to add to their dance experience.

Tap

Tap dance is a type of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. The sound is made by shoes that have a metal “tap” on the heel and toe. Tap is offered to students entering Kindergarten and continues through graduation. Tap is an integral part of dance trying as it works on rhythm, musicality and syncopation.

Ballet

Classical ballet curriculum is based on the Vaganova syllabus of training and is designed to produce dancers with versatility , strength, and artistry. As dancers mature in age and ability, they progress through ballet levels of increasing difficulty. Ballet serves as the basis for all dance genres and is the sole focus of South Georgia Ballet.
