Upper-Level Classes
Level placement for upper level classes is based on technique, movement, ability to pick up movements, and focus, alignment, and strength. We require a minimum of two to three years or more in each level before advancing a student to a higher level. This is necessary for the dancer to learn new skills and, in the repeated years, to perfect and gain confidence in the learned skills. Students are expected to know vocabulary and to apply proper technique to the spoken movement. The number of hours that students train in-studio each week significantly impacts their ability to learn and retain dance movement, and to perform it technically correct.
Pre-Level Classes
In the pre-level classes, students are placed by grade levels. Students are in each level for two years. In year one, the student learns new skills. In year two, the student perfects the skills. They build the confidence, social skills, and technique needed to enter the next level. Students registering mid-year may be required to enter the level below to learn the skills so they can move up to the appropriate grade level (at the teacher's discretion). If you are unsure of your child’s level placement, please email us or call/text 773-401-6549 and we will help place your child in the right class.
Level Placement
As you may already know, dance training requires repeated years of practice, focus, and hard work in each level before moving up. Moving up to the next level means the student has accomplished the necessary goals set for each level. Pre-Level Classes -- In the pre-level classes, students are placed by grade levels. Upper-Level Classes (ages 8 and older) -- Level placement for upper level classes is based on technique, movement, ability to pick up movements, and focus, alignment, and strength. Level placements are something we take very seriously. We observe our dancers closely throughout the entire year, including the summer session. Please understand that we make each decision very carefully in order to fully enhance and broaden each student’s dance education. Placing students in classes that are too advanced for their technical level can be detrimental to their confidence and motivation. Please know that students who are not placed into higher levels are still fantastic dancers who will progress and advance soon enough. We take all dancers very seriously, we care deeply about their progression, and we make our decisions based on each student’s best interest as both individuals and dancers. We have a ballet evaluation form to help us review each student’s technique for proper level placement. Individual forms will be given to parents/guardians upon request.

Pre-Ballet 1
Pre-Ballet 1 students are in the recital. Their teacher dances with them on stage. Your children will have the opportunity to make up their classes once we return to the studio. Meanwhile, we thought parents might like to review some of the basic steps that are taught in both Itty Bitty Ballet and Pre-Ballet 1 classes. Parents can watch the video and practice with their children. Grab a small plush animal to balance on your heads, a scarf (or a small washcloth), or a wand (you can always make one together!). Children learn so much from these videos -- dance moves, warm ups, following directions, and creativity -- just like in the classroom.
Itty Bitty Ballet
The Itty Bitty Ballet classes do not perform in the recital; however, they learn the same steps as the students in Pre-Ballet 1, but they do it with their grown up. Parents can watch the video and practice with their children. Grab a small plush animal to balance on your heads, a scarf (or a small washcloth), or a wand (you can always make one together!). Children learn so much from these videos -- dance moves, warm ups, following directions, and creativity -- just like in the classroom.
MDA's 30-Day Split Challenge
We want to see more of our dancers have their splits. We have designed this stretch guideline for our dancers to follow. Hold each stretch for 30 seconds and do both sides. Practice for 30 days in the next five weeks (this includes one rest day a week). Take a pic the first day you start and every Sunday to track your progress. Tag us and use the hashtag #MDAsplitchallenge and you could be featured on our page. You will be surprised how much progress you will make if you are consistent. Also attached is an accountability calendar to mark the days you practice. We can't wait to see the progress you all make!
Teddy Bear Picnic
Join Ms. Shannon for a Teddy Bear Picnic. You’ll need a small blanket, a basket with your favorite picnic food, and of course your teddy bear. All teddy bears are welcome, and feel free to have your real lunch ready to eat with your teddy bears after we do ballet. Have a "beary" good time!
Happy Easter Ballet
Bring your eggs to hide, a basket, and an instrument. Don't have any of these items? That's ok, you can make one or use something similar. We'll have an egg hunt and an Easter parade to celebrate this joyous occasion.
Springtime Ballet
This Springtime Ballet is gear for our youngest dancers -- Itty Bitty, Pre-Ballet 1, 2, and 3 (up to age 8). Grab your favorite springtime stuffed animal, a bunny or chic. This is a great ballet as we anticipate new life at the end of these long winter days. It reminds grown ups that there will be new life at the end of this pandemic as well.
Princess Ballet Tea Party
This Princess Ballet Tea Party is geared for our youngest students -- Itty Bitty, Pre-Ballet 1, 2, and 3 (up to age 8). Grab a real or pretend wand (or make one), your favorite stuffed animal, a plastic cup, plate, and spoon and get ready for a fancy tea party with Ms Shannon!
