About Academy of Dance

Welcome to Academy of Dance, a premier dance studio nestled in the heart of Terre Haute, Indiana. At Academy of Dance, we are passionate about fostering a love for movement and artistic expression across a wide spectrum of dance styles. Our comprehensive curriculum is designed to nurture dancers of all ages and skill levels, from the earliest budding ballerinas to seasoned performers. We offer a rich selection of classes including the foundational grace of Ballet, the energetic rhythms of Hip Hop and Jazz, the percussive artistry of Tap, and the expressive freedom of Contemporary dance. For those interested in partner dancing, our Ballroom offerings cover a variety of styles, while the dynamic world of Breakdance and Musical Theater provides exciting avenues for exploration. We also provide classes in Zumba for a fun, fitness-focused approach to movement, and our standalone Barre classes emphasize strength and technique. Our dedicated instructors are committed to providing high-quality instruction in a supportive and inspiring environment, helping each student discover their potential and achieve their dance dreams right here in Terre Haute.

Classes

Ballet, Tap, Jazz

Every class will wear a different costume in the show; so, if your dancer is in more than one class, they will receive more than one costume.

Private Lessons including choreography (including audition video)
$75.00

Comprehensive private lessons that include personalized choreography creation and assistance with audition video production. These sessions are ideal for dancers preparing for auditions or seeking to develop unique performance pieces.

Private Lessons (Technique Only)
$60.00

Private lessons focusing solely on technique, designed to enhance a dancer's individual skills and proficiency in various dance forms. These sessions are tailored to address specific areas for improvement.

Musical Theatre Dance

For ages 10 and up, this class teaches Broadway choreography on a variation scale, so dancers can choose the level of difficulty at their own discretion during class. If a dancer wants to do a single turn, they can; but if they want to bust out a triple, they are welcome to! The class will explore multiple styles of dance across the musical theatre genre, including Fosse, Tharp, Nicholaw and others! No prior musical theatre dance experience is required.

Performance Ensemble

Academy of Dance has its own performance ensemble for 3rd-12th graders that rehearses weekly and performs around the community throughout the year. To participate one must be registered for at least two technique classes (one of which must be ballet) and commit to attend all weekly rehearsals and performances. The start-up costume fee is $75 the first year; other costume costs may arise.

Tap

The study of tap is a fascinating exploration of rhythms and sounds made by the feet. This class features a technical warm-up, tap movements through space, and graded learning of tap steps.

Jazz

Jazz is a stylized dance form accompanied by contemporary music. This class features a technical warm-up, center isolations, floor and/or barre stretch, and larger movement combinations. Previous ballet training is strongly recommended. Offers great preparation for school dance teams.

Modern

Modern is a contemporary form of dance combining many dance forms including ballet, jazz, and various ethnic styles. It began as a rebellion from classical dance and has developed into an exciting, eclectic art form which emphasizes the body’s natural movement patterns and individual creativity. Modern dance technique develops strength, coordination, flexibility, and stamina through floor and center exercises and large movement combinations. In addition, the intellectual and creative processes of the dancers are enhanced by movement problem-solving and analysis.

Pointe

Pointe classes are for those students who have developed the necessary physical and technical readiness. Requirements include enrollment in at least one high-level ballet class and an invitation from the director.

Ballet

Classical ballet is the foundation of all dance forms and therefore most important in dance education. It is strongly recommended for all students. Exercises at the barre and in the center develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, self-discipline, and a keen sense of body-awareness. A contemporary understanding of anatomy and kinesiology is combined with practice of the classical form. This class provides students with sound technical training as well as an interesting and expressive workout. Class is taught in French vocabulary with classical music.

Pre-Ballet

This class is an introduction to classical ballet provides students with sound technical training while developing a love and appreciation of this beautiful art for all students. Exercises at the barre and in the center develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, self-discipline, and a keen sense of body-awareness. Class is taught in French vocabulary with classical music.

Pre-Technique

This class is designed to prepare the young dancer for the more technically demanding Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Tap classes. Students explore the dance elements of shape, time, space, and energy in more depth and are offered a structured base to practice basic motor skills, develop rhythm, and learn basic moves of ballet, jazz, modern and tap techniques.

Beginning Dance

This class encourage children to explore movement and discover their potential in a positive and happy environment. Students tell stories through movement; explore the dance elements of shape, time, space, and energy; and practice basic motor skills. This is an excellent and interesting approach to prepare children for future technical training in dance and/or sports. Emphasis is on individual development and creativity.
