PBT

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program designed to enhance students' technique by focusing on training the muscle memory essential for every exercise in all forms of dance. PBT focuses on core strength, weight placement and alignment of the body with carefully designed exercises and repetitions of these exercises that trigger their muscle memory and prevent injury. All MDC instructors are certified in PBT .

Acro

AcroDance, or “acro” as it is commonly referred to in the dance world, is the beautiful fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Often defined by unique choreography, acro dancers seamlessly blend musicality, emotional expression, line and extension with acrobatic movements in a dance context. Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, based in flexibility and strength. Instructor is certified in Acrobatic Arts curriculum (Modules 1 & 2).

Contemporary

As one of the most popular dance styles throughout the world, contemporary combines aspects of ballet, modern, and jazz techniques. It is an expressive style and often incorporates tumbling and acro as a way to create the desired visual effect. This style of dance is typically for more mature dancers as it requires a solid technical foundation. Concurrent enrollment in ballet is required.

Turns & Leaps

This is a specialty class in which dancers will focus solely on improving and learning turns and leaps. Each class will incorporate basic technical work to improve both skills as well as adding in new and challenging skills to be used in choreography. Concurrent enrollment in jazz class is required. This class does not perform in recital.

Hip Hop

This dynamic and hard-hitting style is commonly seen in commercials, in music videos, and on social media. Hip hop is full of fast-paced, sharp movements, contrasted with moments of slow and smooth choreography. Join us for a little pop, lock, and lots of attitude.

Tap

Tap is a very unique style of dance that requires tap shoes in order to make certain rhythms and sounds on the floor. Musicality and dynamics are both a big part of tap technique and are great skills for all dancers to learn.

Musical Theater

This is a style that includes many facets of dance. While the majority of musical theater is based in jazz and tap, it all depends on the music and character being portrayed in the song. There is a special emphasis placed on performance quality, stylized choreography, and, of course, acting.

Jazz

Traditional jazz technique is stylized, rhythmic, and high-energy. While jazz uses the same technical concepts learned in ballet, there are some variations that set jazz apart. Dancers will focus on turns, leaps, changing direction, and adding some attitude into their movement. Jazz class is an important foundational class for all dancers, second only to ballet. Required class for company members.

lyrical

This class is for young dancers who would like to take contemporary in the future. Lyrical choreography is firmly based in ballet technique, so prior ballet experience is recommended. Lyrical differs from ballet in that it places an emphasis on expression, performance, and conveying the meaning of the song lyrics to the audience. Concurrent enrollment in ballet is required.

Ballet

Ballet is the foundation of most dance styles and undoubtedly the most important class for all dancers. Ballet focuses on mastering the basics, such as plié, passé, relevé, and battement, in order to be successful at more challenging steps like cabriole, grand jeté, and a la second turns. Required class for Company members.

Pointe/Pre-Pointe

This is a ballet technique class with an emphasis on strengthening important muscle groups to safely and beautifully dance “en pointe.” Dancing en pointe is challenging and requires correct training in order to be performed correctly. Dancers who have earned their pointe shoes will take class en pointe, making adjustments as the instructor deems necessary. Pre-pointe dancers will take the class with ballet shoes and work to complete the skills listed on their Pointe Shoe Checklist as they work towards earning their pointe shoes.

Combo Class (ballet/tap)

This unique style of class combines approximately 30 minutes of ballet and 30 minutes of tap in each hour-long session. Dancers will learn the fundamentals and technique of both styles then practice putting it all together when they learn choreography. The curriculum is focused on age-appropriate skills for our studios younger dancers. In this class, dancers will develop valuable skills such as coordination, flexibility, creativity, self-confidence and body awareness.
