Performances include two full mainstage productions each year plus campus showcases; many lead roles are mic’d, and select shows are recorded for learning and review. Enrollment is open year-round except during June recital prep.
Acting Classes
Build stage presence and storytelling from the ground up. Acting classes are leveled (I–IV) for ages 7 through adult and meet weekly, with training in voice work, movement, character development, scene study, and script analysis. Students explore classic techniques such as Meisner and Stanislavski while learning to make strong, believable choices on stage and on camera. Performances are scheduled each fall and summer, and every student is cast in roles that suit their current level, with advanced options for honors and college-prep actors.

Improv & Choreography
Improve your dance technique, body awareness, and creativity. An improvisational approach to movement equips students with the creative critical thinking skills that are essential for dancers. Through this experience, students will learn that they are artists first, and that they have great capacity to create through movement. We explore these concepts through games, visual art, and writing, to experience how other art forms are connected to dance! All dance students ages 8-up who are currently enrolled in at least one program may enroll in this class at no additional charge!
Hip Hop/Jazz III
After establishing a solid technical foundation, students in Hip Hop III can now focus on more complex combinations and performance technique. Students will be continually challenged physically and mentally as they continue to work on endurance, strength, musicality, as well as retention. In this class, students will learn to pick up choreography faster, as well as execute more difficult floor work, turns and leaps. They will also learn the importance of isolations and dynamics to execute pop-and-lock and funk movements. Another aspect of the class is introducing students to choreography technique and teaching them how to explore and create their own movement. ***Hip Hop III is not a beginning level class - brand new dancers in this age group will need to have previous dance experience and/or meet with the faculty to determine the best class placement.***
Hip Hop/Jazz II
In Hip Hop/Jazz II, we build off of what the students have learned in level one, while also adding new and exciting challenges. In this class, we begin working on turns, leaps, kicks, and floor work, while also increasing the amount of endurance and strength and conditioning work with an emphasis on core and upper-body. Students are encouraged to take risks, perform bigger, and memorize more challenging and longer combinations and performance pieces.
Hip Hop/Jazz I (Ages 7-up)
Hip Hop/Jazz I combines street dance with funk and jazz in a fun, fast-paced environment. The class strives to equip students with the knowledge of various hip hop styles while also teaching the foundations of jazz technique and terminology, such as pas de bourree, jazz squares, ball changes, etc. Students will learn the importance of isolations and dynamics to execute pop-and-lock and funk movements, while also increasing endurance and flexibility. In addition, this class hopes to foster and improve skills such as self-discipline, spatial awareness in the center and across the floor, gross motor skills and social interaction in a fun environment.
Pre Hip-Hop/Acro (Ages 4-6)
Pre-Hip Hop/Acro is an introductory program that focuses on fundamental positions and movement skills that encourage body awareness and coordination. The class covers introductory skills such as forward and backward rolls (including straddle), splits, and bridges. Emphasis is placed on individual and team play exercises that allow students to develop social skills, i.e. waiting for a turn and responding to directions. The tumbling aspect teaches students how to control their bodies while making them stronger and more flexible, while the creative movement aspect allows them to express themselves and explore new movement in a fun way. Students will also begin to learn fun combinations to high energy music. This class is perfect for little ones who love a fast paced and upbeat environment!
Hip Hop Classes (ages 4 - adult)
Our hip hop classes are offered at various times during the week to students beginning at age 5. Hip Hop is a style of dance that is more technically free, funky, and a derivative of jazz and African dance. Hip Hop steps are closely tied with those seen in current music videos and "pop culture". Like Jazz, the music is highly energetic and the movement is more free. We promote a family friendly atmosphere at LAAPA, so only music with appropriate lyrics and messages is used in the classes. Students in our Hip Hop classes come away with a great sense of rhythm and style. A variety of positions, techniques, and terminology are introduced and reinforced within each class to prepare them for any future dance endeavors, whether it be dance teams, musicals, or any of our many performance opportunities. The culmination of the student's hard work is showcased at our Winter Show and Spring Recitals through creative and original choreography.
Hip Hop Classes
Hip Hop classes at LAAPA focus on instruction in fun, upbeat and progressive choreography befitting of today's popular music. All lyrics and choreography taught is age appropriate.
Contemporary/Modern III
Students in this class refine their technique, and improve partnering, improvisation, and acro skills. Students are encouraged to develop artistry and movement quality. Dancers at this level focus on energy (tension, weight, flow), body awareness, rhythmic patterns and choreographic intent and creation.
Contemporary/Modern II
Students in this class will begin to explore their limitations by taking bigger risks with floor work, as well as basic tumbling (i.e. cartwheels, inversions, and shoulder rolls). In contemporary/modern, students will also learn partnering techniques, how to lift, be lifted, and use counterbalance and momentum in their movement. Students will continue to work on their strength and flexibility, as well as having clean transitions between movement. They will also learn how to move through space and travel across the floor with various leaps and turns. In this level, they will continue to learn choreographic elements, how to make creative decisions, and learn various elements of Modern dance history, including the founders of Modern dance.
Contemporary/Modern I
In this course, students are introduced to basic ballet technique in a fun, creative way. They will learn the basics of barre (bar) work, such as plie’s, releve’s, and tendues, center combinations, and across the floor movement, such as skips, chasse’s and leaps, all blended with fun imaginative games and creativity. This class will teach your young dancer to explore movement, learn basic performance technique, proper class etiquette, and imagination while also building a solid foundation in terminology to help them in their dance journey.

Expression, Versatility, Improvisation. These are three of the many things you will learn in Contemporary/Modern Dance. Read more about our Contemporary Dance classes below!
Ballet III
Ballet III is an advanced ballet class that focuses on pointe work (for women) advanced leaps and jumps (for men), and complex combinations and movements. This class, like Ballet II, is mandatory twice a week to help students continue to build strength and endurance. Students will continue to be challenged physically and mentally, while diving deeper into technique, flexibility, injury prevention and dance history. Students will learn how to execute multiple turns, more difficult leaps, beats, and balances en pointe.
Ballet II
Ballet II is a mandatory twice a week class that begins to challenge students physically and mentally. In this class, students learn intermediate level ballet technique and terminology that they then apply to more complex combinations. This class is a preparatory class for pointe work, so there is a strong emphasis on strength building. One-footed turns and pirouettes, intermediate leaps, and more difficult balances are taught in this class. Students will learn how to dance to different rhythms (i.e. waltz and tango), increasing their musicality, and they will begin to explore ballet history as well as current professional dancers. They will also be expected to memorize longer combinations and performance pieces.
Ballet I
In this course, students focus on building a strong technical foundation in the ballet aesthetic while maintaining a fun and creative atmosphere. Our teachers continue to build off of the basics established in pre-ballet, and help the students delve deeper into more complicated steps and terminology. These dancers learn fundamental alignment, body positions and vocabulary that will inform their future dance experiences as they move to the next level. In this class, we begin focusing on balance, one-legged work, two-footed turns, and movement combinations to begin teaching our students how to challenge themselves physically and mentally.
Pre-Ballet

Ballet Classes
Poise, Posture, Technique and Elegance have never been this much fun! Watch our beginning ballet class in action below and learn a little more about our ballet classes. Ballet is the root of dance; therefore, we encourage all students to begin their dance training in this program. A variety of positions, techniques, and terminology are introduced and reinforced within each class. The culmination of the student's hard work and training will be presented at our Spring recital and Christmas Show through creative and original choreography. All of our Ballet faculty have been classically trained in Ballet and have extensive knowledge and backgrounds in Ballet at a University level. We ensure all of our ballet instructors have an in-depth understanding of ballet etiquette, ballet history, terminology, technique, proper body alignment, injury prevention, and pointe training.
Online Dance Classes
Online classes for dance are available ONLY for private one on one instruction. All of our group classes require in person physical attendance!
Private lessons
The majority of our dance classes are in traditional group format and we prefer all of our youth dancers to take at least 1 group class a week. This is to help our program maintain a family atmosphere and to help our dancers with socialization, accountability, motivation and team-work. Weekly group classes increase as dancers get older to help their physical strength, technique, and repertoire grow with them. If a student finds that he/she wants to go deeper with a particular dance style, or wishes to excel at a more pre-professional level, we recommend that they add a weekly private lesson to their regular group classes. Private lessons are the perfect choice for older students who are beginners yet wish to prepare for an upper level class in their age range, but may lack the prerequisites and/or just need a bit of catching up. Many adult students elect to enroll in private dance classes with us simply due to their busy schedules that preclude attendance in our adult dance classes.
Adult Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, and Contemporary/Modern
Never danced or coming back after years away? You’ll fit right in. Adult classes are open to beginners through advanced and include Adult Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, and Contemporary/Modern, with the option to study privately for focused goals like audition prep or a special-event routine. Instruction balances what you want with what you need in a low-pressure environment that respects busy schedules. Performing is invited but completely optional, so you can train for fitness, artistry, or the spotlight on your terms.
Ballet I, Contemporary I, Improv/Choreography, Hip Hop/Jazz I
From “first plié” to confident performer, we welcome beginners as young as 18 months in our Parent/Tot Toddler Dance, then guide ages 4–6 into pre-ballet and pre-hip hop/acro. By age 7, students can choose Ballet I, Contemporary I, Improv/Choreography, Hip Hop/Jazz I, and more, all taught with patient, kid-savvy instruction. Along the way they build coordination, flexibility, and a real dance vocabulary while preparing choreography for our December and June recitals. Stage time is encouraged but never mandatory, so newer or shyer dancers can participate at a pace that fits them.

Tap
Turn movement into music. Tap at LAAPA develops clear sounds, timing, and body percussion starting in a Pre-Ballet/Tap combo for ages 4–6, then advancing through Tap I and Tap II with work on shuffles, flaps, turns, traveling steps, and musical-theater, street, and classical tap styles. Emphasis is on rhythm, listening, and putting steps into combinations that build to the stage. Dancers showcase progress in the Spring Recital and annual Christmas Show.
Hip-Hop
High-energy, clean, and performance-ready. Our Hip Hop track runs from Pre Hip-Hop/Acro for ages 4–6 to leveled Hip Hop/Jazz classes for older dancers, with a focus on isolations, pop-and-lock, floorwork, and the rhythmic precision you’ll see in today’s pop culture. We use age-appropriate music and choreography in a family-friendly environment while building endurance, style, and confidence for stage. Students perform original routines in our Winter Show and Spring Recitals.
Ballet
Ballet is where strong technique, musicality, and beautiful lines begin. Starting at age 4 through adult, students learn proper alignment, core vocabulary, and classical positions in leveled classes that progress at a supportive pace. Because ballet is the root of most concert styles, we encourage new dancers to build their foundation here; as students advance, they prepare for pointe at the appropriate age/level and present polished choreography on stage in our Spring Recital and Christmas Show.
Choreography
In addition to weekly private lessons, our vocal students also have option of attending a weekly enrichment lab of their choice. Our lab classes are held in small groups for 45 minutes each week, and classes include Music Theory, Vocal Ensemble, Songwriting, Zoom Theory, Drama Improv, and Choreography.

Ukulele Lessons
With its peaceful, mellow tone and small form factor, there's a reason the ukulele is so popular today. Our ukulele teachers will have you strumming away to your favorite tunes in no time! Ukulele lessons are offered in 30, 45, or 60 minute sessions. Students meet once each week with their instructor. While most students will begin with a standard/soprano sized, 4 nylon-string ukulele, there are actually a variety of models available to cover a wide range of notes. Originating in the 19th century in Hawaii, the ukulele's popularity in Western music has soared in the past decade! If you're looking for a small, extremely affordable, four-stringed instrument to learn how to play music, then look no further! With a starting price of around $40-50 for a beginning level instrument, the ukulele is one of the most economically accessible instruments today - perfect for beginning students unsure of whether or not they will want to continue lessons down the road. They are, from smallest to largest "Pocket" (piccolo, sopranino, sopranissimo), "Soprano" (Standard), "Concert" (alto), Tenor (taro patch, Lili'u - 4,5, or 8 strings!), "Baritone" (bari, uke, taropatch 8 string), "Bass" , and "Contrabass" (U-Bass, Rumbler). Interestingly enough, a single, standard sized, 6 stringed acoustic guitar is able to play the majority of notes that all of these ukulele models combined can produce! However, the simplicity and small form factor of the ukulele is what makes it such a fun instrument that's easy to play - perfect especially for beginners with smaller hands that may eventually want to learn the guitar.

Songwriting / Composition / Arranging / Music Theory (ages 9-adult)
The focus of our writing program is to train students in the art of expressing their ideas to other musicians. Students will learn to use notation software, MIDI recording, digital audio software, and of course, good old fashioned pen, staff paper and/or notepads. All programs are available in weekly 30, 45, or 60 minute private sessions. The Songwriting Program (ages 9-adult) focuses heavily on learning to write music in the contemporary styles of today's pop, rock, christian, country, and jazz artists. You'll learn to write melodies with a hook, create leadsheets, basic chord structures and how to tell a story that flows through your choice of lyrics. The Music Theory Program is offered apart from our weekly general theory group classes for those students who wish to intensively study only music theory. The class is open to students (ages 9-up) at all levels and consists of a 30, 45, or 60 minute private lesson each week. These lessons will include a variety of music theory/notation practices including the basics, form analysis, chord/scale nomenclature, Italian terms, functional harmony, and an introduction to basic composition. Students may elect to study either traditional (classical theory) or jazz theory, but a firm grasp of classical theory is required before beginning jazz theory. As students progress, they may elect to pursue further studies in the Composition Program. The Composition Program (ages 9-adult) allows students to study in either classical or jazz formats. Lessons focus on creating melodies, arranging/orchestration techniques, in addition to a review of general music theory/notation practices. Students are expected to learn to write by hand (traditional paper and pencil) in addition to using the latest in computer notation software and other computer based technologies. Our Composition/Piano program is the recommended composition program for younger beginners and those without any prior musical training. Classes focus on the development of fundamental composition and keyboard skills.
