About Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet

Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet, located in Shreveport, Louisiana, has been a cornerstone of the local arts community since its founding in 1973 as Ballet Lyrique. This esteemed non-profit organization is dedicated to educating the community in the art of classical ballet, which they believe serves as the fundamental basis for all other dance forms. Under the artistic direction of Kathryn Drake McDowell, with support from Assistant Artistic Directors Avery Avant and Grace Matthews, the company offers a rich tradition of classical ballet alongside contemporary and musical theater expressions. Annually, Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet delights audiences with two full-length classical ballets, including the beloved holiday production of "The Nutcracker" and a spring performance showcasing repertoire classics. Beyond performances, the studio has reached over 200,000 students in Caddo and Bossier Parishes through its impactful school performance program, annually welcoming approximately 8,500 students to free or low-cost performances. This program provides vital exposure to classical ballet, aligning with Louisiana state curriculum to enhance understanding of its history and thematic elements, aiming to spark a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Dancers from age ten through adulthood are invited to hone their skills through open auditions each spring for the Junior and Senior Companies, gaining invaluable training and performance experience. Many alumni have gone on to dance professionally and pursue higher education in dance. The Ballet continues to thrive through community support, the dedication of volunteers, and its status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
