We foster a welcoming and supportive "Community Not Competition" environment, dedicated to cultivating a love for dance in individuals of all ages, experience levels, and sizes. Our studio offers a diverse range of programs, including engaging short mini-sessions and enriching summer camps. Explore various dance styles such as Ballet, Salsa, Bachata, and Hip Hop. While adult Ballet classes do not participate in the spring recital, other adult classes have the option to collectively decide on recital involvement; performance is never a requirement and numerous other performance avenues exist. 2nd Street Studio of Dance is proud to be home to the Diversiform Dance Project, a professional dance company established in 2021. The Diversiform Dance Project actively creates new works for the Detroit community, embracing professional dancers of diverse backgrounds. Their eclectic repertoire fuses modern, jazz, ballet, and social dance forms, ensuring exciting performance experiences. Having recently celebrated its 5th season, the project has showcased its talent at events like the Detroit City Dance Festival, Oakland Dance Festival, and the National Dance Education Organization Conference, presenting a full-length show annually. Adult ballet classes

Our adult ballet classes do not perform in our spring recital. Our other adult classes will discuss and decide if together if they wish to perform in the recital or not. Recital participation is never mandatory in order to be a part of the class. There are multiple other performance opportunities for adults!

Adult Dance Classes
5 classes for $100 10 classes for $175

We welcome adults of all ages, experience levels, and sizes at 2nd Street Studio of Dance! Our adult dance classes do not have any associated performances involved, and are just for fun and fitness! We do offer multiple performance opportunities per year for those wishing to participate, but these have rehearsal times outside of class. Adults do not have to follow a strict dress code and are encouraged to wear what makes them feel comfortable and confident. We suggest athletic/dance friendly clothing and proper dance shoes. Adults may guarantee a spot in a class by registering and making monthly payments or pay per class at the rates below.

Pre-Professional Ballet Program

2nd Street Studio of Dance's Pre-Professional Ballet Program is for students ages 5 and up. Students must take exams in order to be moved up to a higher level. These exams give students clear goals and ensure that students are being placed in the level that will benefit their technique the most and not just with other students their age. Each level has a specific uniform dress code to promote a professional appearance.

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)

This is a fitness class that focuses on exercises that will help strengthen the muscles needed for ballet technique. This class should not be thought of as an actual ballet class, but as a supplemental fitness class. It is also great for athletes of all kinds.

Leaps and Turns

This is a jazz based technique only (no choreography learned) class. Dancers will warm up before working on their leaps and turns.

Tap

Tap dance is a style that uses metal on the bottoms of shoes in order to make sounds and musical rhythms. This is an upbeat, high-energy class. Music used can be any genre but is most commonly pop or jazz.

Hip Hop

Hip Hop dance came out of the African American community as a style to dance to hip hop music. This is a high-energy, upbeat style that can combine many techniques such as popping, locking, house, jazz, and more. The style that will be used in class will vary depending on the teacher and their background.

Pom

Pom dance combines elements of jazz dance with cheerleading arm movements while holding pom poms. This is a high-energy style that is recommended for dancers interested in joining their school dance teams. Taking jazz is also highly recommended for foundational technique.

Jazz

Jazz dance is an upbeat, high-energy style that today is most often performed to pop music or traditional jazz. Taking ballet is also highly recommended for foundational technique.

Modern

Modern dance was created in the 19th century to go against some of the confines of ballet and positions are not always “pretty.” Floorwork and improvisation are often utilized. As there are many different modern dance techniques including Horton, Limon, Graham, Release, Post Modern, etc. The style that will be used in class will vary depending on the teacher and their background. Music used for this class can be from any genre. Traditional classes will use drumming. Taking ballet is also highly recommended for foundational technique.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a mix of jazz and ballet where movements often evoke emotions or tell a story. Music used for class is often ballads and slow tempos. Taking ballet is also highly recommended for foundational technique.

Contemporary

Contemporary is a mix of dance styles including modern, lyrical, jazz, and sometimes even hip hop. Improvisation can also be utilized. Music used for class can be from any genre. Taking ballet is also highly recommended for foundational technique.

Pointe

Pointe is ballet performed on the toes. Dancers must be at least 12 years old, approved to be on pointe by the studio, and taking at least 2 ballet classes per week in addition to their pointe class. All pointe shoes must be professionally fitted.

Ballet

Ballet is a beautiful artform that promotes balance, flexibility, poise, athleticism, and discipline. Ballet classes may seem “slow” to some dancers because it takes time to understand and execute even small movements correctly. Music used for class is often piano accompaniment. Ballet is highly recommended for dancers wishing to improve their overall dance technique as well as lyrical, contemporary, modern, and jazz dancers.

Acro

These classes work on building the strength and flexibility to execute acrobatic and tumbling skills. In order to progress safely, dancers must be committed to training.

Dance & Tumble

This is a 45 minute class designed to introduce students to a formal dance class setting where they will learn basic dance and tumbling movements (rolls, crab walks etc.). Classes will also consist of fun games and improvisation so they can be creative! Due to the longer amount of time than the 30 minute Pre-Ballet class, these students will need the ability to focus a bit more and having taken a class before can be beneficial.

Pre-Ballet

This is a 30 minute class designed to introduce students to a formal dance class setting where they will learn basic pre-ballet movements. Classes will also consist of fun games and improvisation so they can be creative!

Dance with Me

This class is for both the child and parent or caretaker. It is a great introduction into both dance and a classroom setting for children who have never had formal lessons or preschool. This is also a good option if your child is not quite confident in taking class without you present.

Adult Dance Classes

We offer adult dance classes for multiple levels and styles! Our adult ballet classes do not perform in our spring recital. Our other adult classes will discuss and decide if together if they wish to perform in the recital or not. Recital participation is never mandatory in order to be a part of the class.

Pre-Professional Ballet Program Classes (for ages 5+)

These ballet classes are geared toward the serious ballet student. We recommend this program for focused students looking to work with other students who are equally as focused, those looking to reach a high level of ballet technique, and/or those looking to pursue dance in college or as a career. We do not recommend this program for students involved in lots of activities or who enjoy the social aspects of dance more than technical mastery. Dancers will take formal exams in order to be given specific feedback and to be placed into each level. These classes require a teacher recommendation and thus are not available for online registration. To get an evaluation or register for one of these classes please contact us. All dancers must adhere to a strict dress code and are held to high standards of attendance, engagement, and classroom etiquette above and beyond our standard studio policies.

Technique Only Classes

These classes do not participate in the spring recital performance. They only focus on technique and not learning dances or choreography. All technique classes are sorted by skill level and require a teacher recommendation, so they are not available for online registration. Classes Sorted by Age Groups

These dance classes group students who are in the same age bracket together. No teacher evaluations are required for these classes. This is a great way to ensure friends can be placed together in the same class. Classes may encompass a range of skill levels. These classes are available online for registration and participate in our spring recital performance. All dancers must follow our studio policies and dress code.

Preschool Classes

Dance classes at an appropriate level for preschool age dancers based on age groupings. All classes combine structure, creativity, and fun! These classes are available online for registration. All classes accept the Dance with Me classes will participate in the spring recital performance. All dancers must follow our studio policies and dress code.

Swing Dance

East Coast Swing uses a basic 6-count step pattern and was created by a group of dance instructors in the 1940s to provide a swing dance that was easy to learn for any level dancer. It continued to be popular through the beginnings of the Rock n' Roll era. Each Beginner’s Crash Course will be in this style. Our progressive lessons will be exploring East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston, and more!
