Dance Arts Los Alamos (DALA) Downtown Studio, nestled in the heart of Los Alamos, New Mexico, offers a comprehensive dance education for all ages and abilities. Under the artistic direction of Jonathan Guise and Associate Director Karina Wilder, DALA cultivates a strong dance community with a focus on professional development and a positive learning environment. Students are placed based on ability, fostering personalized progression within a welcoming, creative, and supportive atmosphere where respect is paramount. DALA's diverse curriculum spans a wide array of disciplines. A robust Classical Ballet program, with annual evaluations for advanced levels, forms a core offering, complemented by instruction in Modern dance (including Horton, Graham, and Limon techniques), Jazz (Classical and Contemporary), and Hip Hop. The studio also provides dedicated Tap classes, World Dance Traditions like Spanish Flamenco, and Scottish Highland Dance. Young dancers can begin their journey in Creative Movement and Dance Exploration, with specialized Pre-Ballet & Pre-Ballet/Tap classes. Musical Theater and Adaptive Dance are also featured. PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique)

PBT is a conditioning program, designed specifically for the dancer, blending training techniques from dance, Pilates, and fitness. Utilizing tools like yoga balls, thera-bands, and ballet knowledge; this class will guide dancers through exercises they can take home and increase progress appropriately and progressively.

Strength & Stretch

Stretch & Strengthen is a conditioning class that will guide dancers through specific workouts and stretches with what a dancer needs in mind. Dancers will then be able to take these workouts home and improve on their technique so they can reach their potential in a healthy and safe manner.

Dance Conditioning

ADULT Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)

PBT is a conditioning program, designed specifically for the dancer, blending training techniques from dance, Pilates, and fitness. Utilizing tools like yoga balls, thera-bands, and ballet knowledge; this class will guide dancers through exercises they can take home and increase progress appropriately and progressively. Adult Modern

Our Adult Modern classes involve a variety of techniques that can be utilized to investigate free movement through space, inversions, floorwork, partnering, and more. It encompasses creative problem solving while leading the dancers through exercises that challenge time, gravity and space.

Adult Flamenco

Class will concentrate on the fundamentals of this art form using techniques and skills which include arm work (braceos), hand work (floreos), footwork (taconeos), postures, and specific dances exploring the different rhythms of this incredibly rich Andalusian Culture.

Adult Tap

Tap is one of the oldest dance forms in this country. Students are taught rhythms, timing, and leg/foot coordination done to various types of music. This is a great class to develop stronger musicality. At the Adult level this class progresses in a comfortable and fun way!

Adult Ballet

Whether dancing for fun or enrichment Adult Ballet is an excellent addition for anyone. This class offers everyone the opportunity to stay in shape, increase body awareness, and appreciate an amazing artform.

Adaptive Dance: Modern, Ballet, and Jazz Dance techniques

The classes provide an opportunity for students to learn about Modern, Ballet, and Jazz Dance techniques that are specifically adapted to each individual student’s needs. Each 30 minute class is led by two co-teachers, to offer full support to the dancers as they attend class.

Adaptive Dance

The Adaptive Dance Program at Dance Arts Los Alamos aims to provide differently-abled dancers a safe, professional, and structured space to confidently learn about self-expression through movement while acquiring knowledge on communication, teamwork, creative problem solving skills, and leadership through the art of dance.

Ballet 1, Modern 1, & Beginning Level Classes

At age 8, we consider dancers for Ballet 1, Modern 1, and Beginning Level Mixed Repertoire classes. Ballet 1 is the primary beginning of our Classical Ballet Levels. Modern 1 is the beginning of our Modern/Contemporary classes. Beginning Level Mixed Repertoire classes are the first level of those programs. Most students entering Level 1 or Beginning Level classes will be prepared properly from their time in our Pre-Ballet or Pre-Ballet/Tap classes.

Pre-Ballet

Pre-Ballet and Pre-Ballet/Tap dance helps foster adaptivity and creative freedom. Great for increasing rhythm awareness and detail oriented concentration through foundations of Tap Technique. The introduction of Classical Ballet Technique, this class is going to start any young dancer off on the right foot. Focusing on proper vocabulary and the structure of a Classical Ballet Class, dancers will be prepared to progress with a solid foundation to work from.

Dance Exploration

The beginning of everything is discovery, and this class is exactly that. Children will be guided on a developmental journey that highlights structure, creativity, and fun.

Creative Movement

Creative Movement creates joy by exploring movement through the use of music, the use of props, musical instruments and sing along songs. This is a nurturing and friendly environment for your child to explore and develop motor and coordination skills, promote creativity, stimulate imagination and self-expression. This course is constructed to include an accompanying adult.

Classical Spanish & Flamenco

Flamenco: Class will concentrate on the fundamentals of this art form using techniques and skills which include arm work (braceos), hand work (floreos), footwork (taconeos), postures, and specific dances exploring the different rhythms of this incredibly rich Andalusian Culture. Classical Spanish Dance (Danza Estilizada): This class will concentrate on the use of castanets while exploring the rich culture of Spanish Dance including steps from Escuela Bolera (XVIII century dances), regional dances, flamenco and ballet.

Highland Dance

“Scottish Highland Dancing is a celebration of the Scottish spirit. The dances are a spectacular combination of strength, agility, movement, music, and costume. Unlike other dance mediums, Highland dances are generally danced solo and in competition. Dancers typically dance to traditional Scottish music such as Strathspeys, Reels, Hornpipes and Jigs all played by an accompanying bagpiper. The dances are made up of different parts, called steps and there are usually four or six steps to a dance.” – FUSTA (Federation of United States Teacher and Adjudicators)

Tap Dance

The Tap program includes Pre-Ballet/Tap classes and Tap dance classes.

Jazz Dance

The Jazz program at DALA includes Jazz, Swing, Hip Hop, and Musical Theater dance classes. Our instructors will impart the technical aspect of Jazz with parallel positions, hinges, various leaps, and layouts as well as focusing on the performance aspect, with exercises in expression, fluidity, and composition of movement with a hint of funk. Hip Hop Dance is the expressive art form that grew from street dance and break dancing. Musical Theatre is a great class for those interested in Broadway and looking to improve their dancing. Swing dance focuses on partnering and quick allegro movements. The Jazz program at DALA has 3 levels and is leveled by ability. We use ages as a guideline, not a rule. You should expect to be at the same level for 5+ years in order to fully master all concepts.

Modern Dance

Modern involves a variety of techniques including Limon, Horton, Graham, and Release that can be utilized to investigate free movement through space, fall and recovery, inversions, and momentum. It encompasses creative problem solving while leading the dancers through exercises that challenge time, gravity and space. The Modern program at DALA has 5 levels and is leveled by ability. We use ages as a guideline, not a rule. You should expect to be at the same level for 3-5 years in order to fully master all concepts. The Modern program includes both Modern and Contemporary dance classes.

Variations

This class is for intermediate and advanced dancers. Variations is a classical ballet class that focuses on learning and perfecting popular variations from Classical ballets like The Sleeping Beauty, Le Corsaire, Don Quixote, and more.

Pointe with Ballet 4/5 (Ages 14-18)

This is the highest level of Pointe Technique. Students will progress all they have learned and focus on artistry while learning todays most popular Classical Variations. Recommended 4 Classes per week for proper strength training.

Pointe with Ballet 3 (Ages 11-18)

This is the second level of Pointe Technique. Students will enhance the basics they’ve learned in Pointe 2 while building consistency with new ideas and fundamentals in the technique. In order for consistent strength and structure, dancers need to avoid missing class. Recommended 2 classes per week for proper progression.

Beginning Pointe (Ages 9-13)

This is the first level of Pointe Technique. It is intended for dancers that are working towards their first pair of pointe shoes and those that are in their first and second year of Pointe Technique. Strengthening and theory exercises will build a structured and safe foundation for higher levels of Pointe Technique. Recommended 2 classes per week for proper progression.

Ballet 5

This is the final level of the program. Students in this level should be prepared for admission into a University Dance Program or perhaps a traineeship into a professional company upon completion of this level. Recommended 5 classes per week for proper progression. ( 1.5 hours per class )

Ballet 4

An introduction to the Advanced level of Classical Ballet. Students are expected to exhibit a full base of knowledge in theory, vocabulary and body control. The expectation of 90% attendance is required in order to progress and master the technique. Recommended 4 classes per week for proper progression. ( 1.5 hours per class )

Ballet 3

Continuing with the Intermediate development of Classical Ballet, students are pushed to enhance their technical prowess with a consistent approach while being introduced to more difficult theories and fundamentals. Recommended 3 classes per week for proper progression. ( 1.5 hours per class )

Ballet 2

This level begins the Intermediate idea of Classical Ballet. Dancers are expected to exhibit knowledge and execution consistently in order to progress. This level is intended to begin the introduction of Pointe Technique. Recommended 2 classes per week for proper progression. ( 1.5 hours per class )

World Dance Traditions (Ages 8-18)

DALA offers Spanish Flamenco and Scottish Highland classes. Leveling for these classes is based on ability.

Tap Program (Ages 8-18)

Pre-Ballet & Pre-Ballet/Tap (Ages 6-7)

Pre-Ballet and Pre-Ballet/Tap classes are designed for our 6 and 7 year old dancers to build a foundation for their dance training as they work on specific dance steps, strength, flexibility, rhythm, coordination, and much more.

Dance Exploration (Ages 4-5.5)

Dance Exploration is a class for our littlest dancers to gain independence as they work on rhythm, coordination, and developmental movement skills.

Creative Movement (Ages 2-3.5)

Creative Movement is a class for our littlest dancers and their parents to dance together as they work on rhythm, coordination, and developmental movement skills.

Scottish Highland Dance

Scottish Highland Dance gives dancers a glimpse into historic character dancing. Taking more than one technique of dance will reinforce the lessons learned in both techniques.

Modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop technique

Dance Arts Los Alamos offers many classes other than Classical Ballet to bring cultural education to our already diverse community. Modern, Jazz, and Hip Hop technique helps dancers understand different rhythms, movement techniques, and cultural awareness.
