About Kennedy Dance Theatre

Established in 1973 in Pasadena, Texas, Kennedy Dance Theatre (KDT) is a premier performing arts studio in the Houston, Texas area, dedicated to fostering excellence in dance and life values. KDT offers a comprehensive dance education for students of all ages, from toddlers (age 2) to adults, with professional instruction in a wide array of styles including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theater, Acrobatics, Aerial Fabric, Flamenco, Ballroom, Salsa, and Zumba. The studio emphasizes technical proficiency and performance, catering to serious students with graded division classes, pre-pointe, and pointe work. BALLROOM AND SALSA

Basic Ballroom Dance Session I is a n introduction to the foxtrot, waltz, and swing. Besides learning the basic steps in each dance, students will learn techniques for partnership, proper leg action, and how to listen to the music and identify the various rhythms. This class is open to all, even those with two left feet! Basic Ballroom Dance Session II f eatures the basics in foxtrot, rumba, cha-cha, and meringue. As in Session I, students will learn techniques for good partnership, proper, and how to listen for the beat. Latin hip action will be introduced. Session I and Session II are interchangeable. A student may enter either one first. At the end of these sessions you will be able to go out dancing using the basics in six dances and have lots of fun! Salsa class features Rumba, Meringue, and Mambo. As well as learning the basic steps in each of these dances, techniques for good partnership and proper leg action will be presented. Emphasis will be on Latin hip action and listening for Latin beat! There is no required dress code, but if possible please wear leather soled shoes that are not backless (no flip flops or running shoes).

FLAMENCO

Flamenco dance (baile) is a highly-expressive, Spanish dance form. The flamenco is a solo dance characterized by hand clapping, percussive footwork, and intricate hand, arm and body movements. With roots in Indian, Arabic, Spanish cultures, flamenco dance is known for its sweeping arm movements and rhythmic feet stomping. Flamenco dancers spend a great deal of time practicing and perfecting the often difficult dance. *Private Lessons are available upon request.

AERIAL SILKS

"Silks" is a specialty fabric students use to climb, wrap, twist, bend and drop from in a variety of positions and movements.  Fabrics can spin, swing or remain static depending on how students manipulate the silks. Class sizes remain small and are for ages 8 through Adult.

SHINING STARS CLASS

Kennedy Dance Theatre has opened up its studio for a Special Needs Program as a way to reach out to the community. The classes offered are for students with Down Syndrome, Autism and other developmental disabilities. Teachers and student assistants involved volunteer their time each week so the classes can be offered free of charge. This program has been featured on both FOX News and ABC 13 News as a great way for Special Needs children to get involved in an extracurricular activity while improving motor skills, confidence, and socialization. The Special Needs classes are directed by Jennifer Holbert. These classes are for ages 6 and up and include t echnique and performance in Tap, Hip Hop, Gymnastics, & Musical Theatre with a dress code-Girls – Black Leotard, Pink Tights, Black Tap Shoes, Pink Leather Ballet Shoes and Boys in White KDT T-shirt, Black Shorts, Black Tap Shoes, Black Leather Ballet Shoes.  The Special Needs classes perform at KDT’s annual Recital held each year.

Rockin' Tappers

A performing tap group for Level CD 3, Int. 1, Int. 2, SAC 1, SAC 2 and Graded 1 taught by Jeremy Carmona. This group performs throughout the year for community events as well as KDT and Dance Tree Recitals.  By Invitation or class audition only. (pre-requisite: enrolled in a current tap class).

Funky Feet

A performing tap group for Level CD ½. CD 2 & CD 2/3 taught by Erica Carmona. This group performs throughout the year for community events as well as KDT and Dance Tree Recitals.  By Invitation or class audition only. (pre-requisite: enrolled in a current tap class).

Divas

A jazz performing group that is made up of three levels split according to age and ability. "Divas" learn jazz technique as well as fun energetic choreography to perform at various events throughout the year. Pre-requisite: enrolled CD 1 or higher; this performing group is by invitation only and students must be enrolled in a core dance technique class.

Petite Jete'

Petite Jete is a performing group with the focus on ballet. This group will be by audition only for Intermediate classes and graded 1 & 2. It will be an extra ballet class once a week where students will work on technique and learn additional choreography for various community performances and they’ll get to perform at the Ballet Jete' Tea.

Ballet Jete'

Our Pre-Professional Company, Ballet Jete’, is designed to further the student’s education in Ballet training. Pre-requisite to audition is 3 or more years of ballet training in the graded ballet program (or the equivalent of). Students perform throughout the year in classical and contemporary styles and are showcased in KDT’s annual presentation of “The Nutcracker”.  Jete’ is directed by Ballet Mistress, Yuka Omori. Her goal is to promote arts education and to prepare her students who desire to go on to become professional dancers, or to continue on in their study of dance at the university level. Those in the company spend countless hours in the dance studio training in ballet technique and choreography. These elite dancers will receive more performing opportunities throughout the year including being featured in KDT’s annual performances of The Nutcracker and “Enchanted Evening.”  They also participate in many other community performances at the Jewish Community Center, Dance Houston festivals, NASA functions, and have competed at the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP).

Jazz Company Minis & Juniors

The Jazz Company Junior and Mini teams are a multi-level competitive jazz team division. This group competes throughout the year in many different dance styles including Jazz, Contemporary, Musical Theatre & Lyrical. All non-graded levels (Creative Dance, School age and Intermediate classes) will have the opportunity to audition for Jazz Company. These dancers will be placed on either the Mini's or Junior's team based on age, skill set, core class, number of dancers, and teacher decision.  This group is also actively involved in fundraising and has team building socials on weekends when they are not performing.

Kennedy & Company Apprentices

The apprentice level is a combined style level, and reserved for those graded dancers who are training to become a part of Spirit in Motion and/or Rhythm and Moves. They will experience a combination of all dance styles and will be cast in pieces based on the teachers' decisions, stylistic strengths, number of dancers within the level and choreographer's visions. Apprentices will have the opportunity to work with a variety of choreographers.

Rhythm and Moves

Rhythm & Moves serves as a pathway for dancers wanting to focus on choreography in tap, hip hop or musical theatre at an advanced technical level. This group is designed to strengthen the dancer's passion and knowledge within those disciplines as well as explore musicality and rhythm and character portrayal. Dancers will have the opportunity to perform at various venues in the area as well as attend competition in the Spring. Dancers must either be in KDT's graded division or invited to audition for this performing group.

Spirit in Motion

Spirit in Motion serves as a pathway for dancers wanting to focus on choreography in jazz, contemporary, ballet and lyrical at an advanced technical level. This group is designed to strengthen the dancer's passion for movement and to use dance as an expression of faith to glorify God and share His love with others through being examples of discipline and excellence. They participate in various performances throughout the year including Dance Revolution, competitions and community performances. Students are accepted through audition only open to graded 3 and up.

KDT COMPANY

Kennedy & Company - Kennedy and Company is KDT's Competitive Performance Team. Dancers ages 4+ are able to audition for Kennedy & Company as a whole. Dancers are placed in the appropriate competitive group(s) based on the company directors' decision. Their division(s) may depend on age, core class, stylistic strength and skills and attendance record. Dancers in the graded division may be in multiple groups within Kennedy & Co. They participate in several competitions, conventions and additional community performance events and service projects throughout the year.

Classes include warm up & conditioning, stretching, and the latest hip hop techniques and choreography; classes are grouped according to age and experience.

Contemporary/Lyrical Levels 1-3

A modern dance form that fuses modern dance, jazz, and ballet along with combining expressive movements.

Pointe Levels 1-3

For the student who is technically capable and physically developed has the option of participating in Pointe classes as part of their Vaganova training. Dancers must be enrolled in the Graded Ballet Program and have teacher approval.

Tap Levels 1-5

A dance style performed wearing shoes fitted with metal taps, characterized by rhythmical tapping of the toes and heels.

Jazz Levels 1-5

A high energy, stylized dance form that utilizes a dancer's center of gravity. Dancers will focus on gaining strength and flexibility in class while being introduced to current technical leaps and turns. Combinations and choreography is also taught. Students in levels 1-3 are required to take a ballet class to be eligible for jazz.

Ballet Levels 1-5

A classical dance form demanding grace and precision and employing formalized steps and gestures set in intricate, flowing patterns to create expression through movement. At KDT the graded division classes use the Vaganova Method of ballet.

Aerial Fabric

"Silks" is a specialty fabric that students use to climb, wrap, bend and drop as they learn a variety of aerial skills, positions, and movements.

Acro Dance

This acrobatics class combines both the gymnastics and dancing disciplines to condition students flexibility, strength and agility. We will work to perfect balances, into to contortion tricks and how to eventually incorporate acrobatic skills into dance without a mat. Students must be enrolled in a core class that includes ballet (CD, SAC or Int).

Teen/Adult Variety

A class designed for older teens and adults (all levels welcome) that includes, ballet, contemporary, sassy jazz, and more!

Teen/Adult Tap

An older teen/adult tap group for all ages and ability levels.

Graded Level Classes 1-5

Offerings include ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, pre-pointe, and pointe. Classes are designed as an intense program for the serious student, and are held 2-5 times a week based on age and ability. Placement is at the discretion of the faculty based on years of study and ability.

Hippity Hop

A high energy hip hop, fitness and motor skills class. (No prerequisite.)

Hip Hop Levels 1-3 + Graded

Classes include warm up & conditioning, stretching, and the latest hip hop techniques and choreography; classes are grouped according to age and experience.

Intermediate Levels 1 & 2

Combination ballet, tap, jazz classes designed for the experienced school age student who wishes to pursue dance training on a once a week basis. Prerequisite: CD 3, SAC, or above.

Just for BOYS

This class includes hip hop, tap and conditioning structured for boys to improve strength and coordination. (No prerequisite.)

School-Age Combination Levels 1 & 2

Combination class of tap, ballet, and jazz designed to give the beginning older student a broad foundation.

Creative Dance levels 1/2, 2, 2/3 & 3

A continuation of the creative dance curriculum that builds on the previous level. Classes will include the basics of tap and ballet with introductions to jazz and stretching. Students will learn both technique and choreography. Dancers progress to CD 3 or School Age Combo once curriculum has been mastered.

Creative Dance 1

An introductory course in the basics of tap and ballet. Fifteen minutes are devoted to each activity in order to stimulate, yet not overextend, the young child’s limited attention span. Routines are taught in tap and ballet.

Pre-Dance

A learning readiness program designed to develop motor skills and body awareness. Basic gross motor development, simple tap, and ballet routines are taught.
