The Louisville Ballet School

This annual performance marks the LBYE’s first show of the year. The pre-professional dancers of the LBYE present new and existing works from the Classical and Contemporary repertoire. Each year for the Sunday matinee, dancers from the Upper Classical Ballet and Academy Programs join the performance. At the end of the Fall Semester, the Ogle Center on the Indiana University Southeast campus will come to life with a blend of original choreography and beautiful classics.

Students in Classical Ballet II continue to develop the physical maturity needed to learn ballet technique. Exercises facing the barre and in the center continue to develop flexibility, core strength, alignment, control, balance, and coordination. Students’ developing maturity facilitates a greater demand in terms of vocabulary, technical execution and artistry. Classical Ballet II students are invited to register for one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program .

Rigorous and demanding training program for Level Five students, part of the Pre-Professional Program and Senior Louisville Ballet Youth Ensemble.

Academy Program students aspire to a high standard of excellence and professionalism. The goal is to inspire a passion for dance and encourage students to realize their individual potential through the attention offered by world class faculty to help prepare them for a post-secondary or collegiate setting.

Continuing in a structured curriculum, students in these levels work to increase skill, endurance, and discipline, as well as technical and artistic progress. Pointe work may be introduced for students meeting the requirements of age, physical development, and satisfactory skill and knowledge of classical ballet technique. Classical Ballet VI students are encouraged to register for at least one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program.

Through continued repetition and development of the knowledge learned in previous levels, Classical Ballet IV students’ maturing body awareness and concentration facilitates improved core strength, alignment, control, and balance during barre and center work. Curriculum becomes more complex to nurture students’ artistic development. Classical Ballet IV will begin attending classes in a systematic manner with their first class of the week falling on Tuesday or Thursday and second class of the week falling on Saturday.

Creative Movement 1 encourages children to use their imagination in a structured dance class setting to expand body awareness, develop loco-motor skills, and build social sensibilities.

Students in Classical Ballet III build on the technique learned in Classical Ballet II. Exercises with one hand at the barre are introduced as students continue to develop core strength, alignment, control, and balance. Simple enchaȋnement are introduced and the repetition of barre work in the center promotes coordination, flexibility, and concentration. Classical Ballet III students are invited to register for one elective class per semester from the Complementary Program .

In Pre-Ballet, we introduce French terms and basic ballet positions, which reinforce the structured movement activities from previous class levels; the addition of basic tap dance emphasizes rhythm skills and musicality.

Students in Classical Ballet I build the physical maturity needed to learn ballet technique. Exercises facing the barre are introduced to develop core strength, alignment, control, and balance. Center work exercises promote flexibility, stability, and coordination. Students at the Classical Ballet I level generally attend one ballet technique class, but have the option to enroll in two technique classes at a discounted rate.

Creative Movement 2 encourages creative thinking, while cultivating the movement base needed for ballet through improved concentration, gross motor skills, and the study of patterns in both music and movement.

In a more rigorous class environment, the instructors nurture the students’ love for dance and the arts through a more disciplined study of classical ballet technique. Pre-pointe work is introduced at this level in preparation for transition into the upper Classical Ballet levels or the Pre-Professional Program. Classical Ballet V students are also encouraged to register for at least one Complementary Program class per semester.

Must have dual enrollment in Classical Ballet IV to register

Students in Intro to Classical Ballet will develop the physical maturity needed to learn ballet technique. Exercises at the barre and in the center will develop flexibility, core strength, alignment, control, balance, and coordination. Students’ develop an understanding of ballet vocabulary, technical execution and artistry.

Must have dual enrollment in Classical Ballet III to register

This class is for students aged 8-12, requiring Classical Ballet III with prior experience or Classical Ballet IV. Placement is based on experience.

This class is for students aged 10-14, equivalent to Classical Ballet V-VI. It is offered as a standalone and supplement for Intermediate Tap.

Intro to Creative Movement is a great introduction to our Creative Movement classes for students starting in January. With the introduction of a structured yet fun dance class setting, these young dancers will explore self-expression through movement and music, expand body awareness and build social sensibilities.

This class is for students aged 8-12, requiring Classical Ballet III with prior experience or Classical Ballet IV. Placement is based on experience.

This class is for students aged 7-10, equivalent to Classical Ballet II-III. No prior experience is needed for participation.

Teen Ballet is a full ballet class with exercises at the barre, in the center, and moving across the floor. The emphasis of this class will be on understanding and improving proper alignment, posture, rotation, and flexibility. Dancers will also expand their ballet vocabulary while learning new movements and positions.

This class is for students aged 12-16 with at least 1 year of modern experience, requiring Academy 1 or Pre-Professional 1. Pre-requisites are mandatory.

This class is for students aged 7-10, requiring Classical Ballet II with prior experience or Classical Ballet III. Enrollment is based on experience level.
