About North Beach School of Dance

The North Beach School of Dance, nestled in North Beach, Maryland, is a premier destination for fostering a love of movement and artistic expression in dancers of all ages. Established in 1986 as the Abigail Francisco School of Classical Ballet, and under new ownership since July 2023 by former student Rebecca Arden, the studio offers a diverse curriculum. Students can explore foundational and popular styles including Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Musical Theater, and Contemporary dance. Our dedicated faculty comprises eight professionally trained and experienced instructors who remain active performers and trainers, ensuring students benefit from the most current techniques and choreography. The school also enriches the student experience by frequently hosting guest teachers and master classes. Our mission is to uncover the inherent dancer within each student, cultivating self-confidence, self-esteem, poise, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, and overall physical development. The well-equipped facility features professional spring floors, advanced audio systems, and safety features, providing a nurturing and professional environment. Serving a wide geographical area including Calvert County, St. Mary’s County, Charles County, Prince George’s County, and Anne Arundel County, the North Beach School of Dance is a central hub for dance education in Southern Maryland. The school's structured approach includes a significant 'Spring Production,' a major highlight involving extensive rehearsals and public performances, offering valuable performance opportunities for dancers from Pre-Ballet to advanced levels. Key leadership includes an Executive Director and Artistic Director Emeritus.

Private classes

Private classes and semi private classes must be paid in full at time of enrollment. Students who book 10 or more private or semi private classes at a time will receive a 5% discount. All privates must be paid via check or cash only upon arrival for the lesson.

Vaganova Method

Agrippina Vaganova created an instructional system that became known to the world as the standard for ballet instruction: The Vaganova Method. The Vaganova Method leaves a dancer with a strong lower back, plasticity of the arms and endurance in the muscles for the most difficult movements. The training system is designed to involve the whole body in every movement, with equal attention paid to the upper body, legs and feet.

Yoga and/or Stretch for Dancers

Students wear their normal ballet attire (black leotard, pink tights) with hair in bun or ponytail, and are barefoot for class. Necessary equipment includes a Yoga Mat, 2 blocks, Yoga Strap, and Flexistretcher if required by the teacher.

Adult Classes

Loose, comfortable workout-like clothes, preferably all black. No shorts, cropped tops, or shirts with inappropriate language. Hair pulled back off face. Specific shoe requirements may apply, such as any style tap shoes for Adult Tap.

Contemporary

Female students: Black leotard, Black Jazz Pants, slip-on jazz shoes. Students should also have black socks. Male students: Black T-Shirt and Black Jazz Pants with jazz slip-on shoes. Hair should be pulled back into a ponytail. No shorts, capris, or sweatpants allowed. No jazz boots or jazz tennis shoes.

Tap

Female students: Black leotard with pink tights or footie socks and black mid-calf capri pants. Male students: Black T-Shirt and Black Jazz Pants. Hair must be pulled back, preferably in a bun, or tight ponytail. Specific shoe requirements vary by Tap level.

Musical Theater

Female students: Black leotard, Black Jazz Pants, Pedini Jazz Shoes or Slip-on Jazz Shoes. Male students: Black T-Shirt and Black Jazz Pants with jazz slip-on shoes. Hair should be pulled back into a bun or tight, slicked back ponytail. No shorts, capris, or sweatpants allowed. No jazz boots or jazz tennis shoes.

Jazz

Female students: Black leotard, Black Jazz Pants with jazz slip-on shoes. Male students: Black T-Shirt and Black Jazz Pants with jazz slip-on shoes. Hair should be pulled back into a bun or tight, slicked back ponytail. No shorts, capris, or sweatpants allowed. No jazz boots or jazz tennis shoes.

Ballet

Students must wear school colors for ballet (black leotard & pink tights) and have hair pulled back in a bun. Leotards cannot have decorations of any kind and no crisscross straps. Leotards worn during regular class cannot have attached ballet skirts.

Vaganova Level III

Black camisole-style leotard with a pinch front and low back cut, Capezio ballet pink tights, Capezio “Hanami” Canvas Ballet shoes with ribbons only. Preferred leotard brands include Balera, Mondor, Sansha, Lulli, Nikolay, and Mirella.

Vaganova Level II

Beginner

This level is the primary focus of ballet education and technique. This level offers a systematic and consecutive method of training according to the Vaganova method. When a student reaches the Vaganova II level, it is recommended to attend a minimum of two 1.5 hour classes per week, along with the Stretch class.

Ballet – Vaganova Method

Pre-Ballet III

This class solidly prepares students to advance to the first level of the Vaganova method. Students are taught the fundamentals of the ballet technique and develop the self-discipline necessary to continue the study of classical ballet.

Taught once a week for one hour and fifteen minutes.
Pre Ballet II

Pre Ballet II focuses on coordination, motor skills developments, creative expression, musical appreciation, and the relationship between music and dance. Basic ballet steps are incorporated into fun dance exercises that children can enjoy.

Taught twice a week for 1 hour. Students at this level take only one class but are welcome to attend both if desired.
Pre Ballet I

Designed for young students, this class stresses coordination, motor skills, musical awareness, spatial awareness, and listening skills. Special music and musical instruments help engage the students’ attention and imagination.

Fairytale Dance

Expose your child to the wonderful world of dance through story telling, introductory ballet movements, and creative movement. This class allows students to explore music appreciation & rhythmic movement, while learning important skills such as listening and following directions, socialization and team work, self expression, and coordination.

Taught once a week for 45 minutes.
Mommy & Me

The class is a wonderful introduction to the structure of the classroom while allowing your child the freedom to explore his or her own natural movements. Introduces exercises to help develop gross motor skills, spatial awareness, beginner dance technique and positions, coordination, building upper, lower and abdominal strength, as well as providing a fun experience and parent bonding.
