About Factory Street Dance Studio

Factory Street Dance Studio, a cornerstone of dance education in Athens, Ohio since its founding in 1978, offers a vibrant and comprehensive dance experience for all ages and skill levels. As a non-profit studio, we are dedicated to providing non-competitive dance opportunities that enhance technique, foster self-esteem, and promote personal growth. Our curriculum is deeply rooted in a concept-driven approach, incorporating elements of space, time, energy, and shape, drawing inspiration from Bartenieff Fundamentals and Rudolph Laban's movement systems. We are committed to addressing racial inequities in dance education and stand in solidarity with Black artists and students. Our diverse offerings include foundational classes for our youngest dancers (ages 3-5) and specialized programs for older students. Explore genres such as Hip Hop, Jazz, Modern, Ballet, Tap, and African Dance Technique. Advanced ballet students can progress to Pre-Pointe and Pointe, while our Modern classes delve into Humphrey/Limon and Horton techniques. Jazz classes blend high-energy movement with Broadway and Latin Jazz influences, and Tap classes explore "hoofing" and traditional Broadway styles. Hip Hop classes cover street dance basics like popping and locking. We also offer Zumba for fitness-oriented movement. Beyond regular sessions, Factory Street Dance Studio provides enriching summer camps with cross-disciplinary activities including music, arts and crafts, reading, and yoga. Our dedicated instructors, including Bethany Moreland, Maggie Kersten, Abby Mattlin, Joei Forrest, Sarah Braun, and Brooke Boynar, guide students on their dance journeys. We also offer private lessons and a pre-professional Capstone Program for 10th-12th graders. Financial aid is available to ensure accessibility, making the art form enriching for everyone.

Capstone Program

The Capstone Program was developed to provide Factory Street dancers in 10th-12th grades with the opportunity to engage in a pre-professional choreographic or interdisciplinary arts project as the culmination of their education at FSS. Capstone dancers will be mentored in a pre-professional experience that will enable them to explore education and career options in the dance field and learn about diverse dance contexts outside of the walls of FSS and city limits of Athens. Capstone students typically create choreography collaboratively and are invited to combine other artistic skills with their dance project (i.e. visual art, dance videography, musical skills, etc.) High School Capstone students generate fundraising money to support at least one Capstone trip outside of Athens to perform, explore surrounding colleges and universities, and participate in pre-professional dance workshops or series of classes (such as the annual OhioDance Festival) to expose them to the “next step” in their dance education after graduation. Two semesters of Composition are required prior to joining Capstone, and students in Capstone must maintain at least two technique classes per semester.
