Ohio University School of Dance

The dance minor in somatic studies considers the bodily kinesthetic knowledge that dancers develop in the course of their study of movement. Students perform physical activities and analyze movement practices from a variety of somatic theory perspectives and learn through both theory and practice.

The dance minor in history and theory focuses on the growing field of dance studies that use a theoretical perspective based in dance and other movement practices as a means of analyzing dance within larger cultural contexts. This dance minor integrates theory and practice as a means of heightening a scholarly inquiry.

A dance minor is designed for individuals majoring in other fields who wish, in the course of their college experience, to gain an understanding of the art of dance. This program may, however, be applied toward the dance major sequence.

The Bachelor of Arts in Dance curriculum offers a program of broad study in dance within a liberal arts degree framework. The B.A. degree develops the dance skills necessary to perform and a facility in the use of principles and procedures that reflect an intellectual grasp of the art. The degree presents strong potential for interdisciplinary studies and provides preparation for future graduate study.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Dance – Performance and Choreography curriculum provides a foundation on which to build a career as a performer, choreographer or teacher. Core curriculum in dance emphasizes developing performance skills through the study of technique, and fostering creative abilities through the study of choreography.

Improvisation portion of the audition class which provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training and aptitude for further study in dance.

African portion of the audition class which provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training and aptitude for further study in dance.

Jazz portion of the audition class which provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training and aptitude for further study in dance. Jazz shoes may be worn.

Ballet portion of the audition class which provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training and aptitude for further study in dance. Ballet slippers may be worn.

Modern portion of the audition class which provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, level of training and aptitude for further study in dance. Dancers should be prepared to take class barefoot.

Students will engage in daily classes including ballet, contemporary practices, dance repertory, improvisation, and dance composition, learning existing and new choreography from faculty members and instructors.

The Honors Tutorial B.F.A. in Dance offers an individualized course of study for exceptionally talented and motivated students, providing a unique and focused dance education.
