About Haiyan International Dance Academy

Haiyan International Dance Academy (HIDA), located in Beaverton, Oregon, is a premier destination for aspiring dancers of all ages, offering a comprehensive and high-quality dance education. Founded by esteemed former principal dancer Haiyan Wu, who graced stages with the National Ballet of China and Miami City Ballet, HIDA is built on a foundation of classical technique and artistic excellence. Our distinguished faculty comprises current and former professional dancers, including Artistic Director Haiyan Wu, specializing in Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, and Lyrical dance. Yang Zou, a former principal dancer with Guangzhou Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theatre, also leads Ballet instruction. Complementing this expertise is Amanda Monte, an experienced competitor who teaches Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, and Jazz. Jennah Pendleton, a professional ballet alumna, brings her passion for Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary, with a focus on modern and improvisational dance. Alexa McKone enriches the curriculum with diverse training in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, African, Aerial, and Acrobatics, while Magwire Hammond assists in nurturing young talent. HIDA fosters technical excellence, artistic expression, and self-confidence across a wide array of disciplines including Ballet (from Pre-Ballet to advanced Pre-professional and Ballet & Pointe), Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Aerial, and Acrobatics. Classes

Rising Stars Dance Team

Rising Stars Dance Team

This team of elite dancers are middle or high school students that are committed to the art of dance. On top of taking 6-14 hours of professional dance training per week, they also take summer and winter intensive dance trainings.

6-14 hours of professional dance training per week
Contemporary Dance (8+)

HIDA’s contemporary dance class tends to mix the strong and controlled legwork of ballet with big torso movement, and also employs contract-release, floor movement, fall and recovery.

Lyrical (8+)

Lyrical dance is a kind of dance designed from the combination of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. HIDA’S lyrical dance class focuses on the expression of strong emotion and expressiveness.

Jazz Level I (6-8)

HIDA’s Jazz Level 1 class covers the basic American Jazz dance movements, hand, legs & arm coordination, turn preparation and execution, basic leaps and jumps, body isolation as well as choreographed dance

Stretching Class

Basic ballet stretches on the floor for the purpose of building strength, flexibility and the ability to balance forces in the body. Builds better alignment and enhances body coordination.

Adult Ballet

Introduce the basic ballet positions of arms and feet. Strong emphasis on slow barre and center exercises, which includes plies, tendus, jetes, rond de jambe, fondus, releves, grand battements, sauté, and pirouette. Exercises are simple and straightforward combinations help students develop body coordination and proper body position and nice posture. The class is less difficult, and it fits anyone with/without previous ballet experience.

Ballet & Pointe

This class focusing on developing strength, advanced ballet technique, steps, combinations and expression. Students must be at least 11 years old and have demonstrated proper technique, and strength in Pre-professional Level 2 classes. This class is for the more advanced ballet students and requires faculty permission in order to participate. Students will be exposed to works from classical ballet variations such as Giselle, Coppelia, Esmeralda, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, etc, all on pointe. Students must take at least two Ballet & Pointe classes.

Pre-professional Ballet II (11+)

The classes include more difficult barre and centre exercises in terms of combinations and detailed implementation of movements. This class requires strong technique and good musicality. Students will complete full barre and centre practice in adage, petit allegro, medium jumps, grand allegro as well as pirouttes. The classes will emphasis on clean footwork, superiority movement with high leg extensions engaging the lower back and core muscles. Students will also learn prepointe works, which includes releves, ballones, and echappes, at the barre and centre eventually after developing proper skills for pointe works. For the possible best result, students are required to take at least two Pre-professional Level 2 classes per week to maintain the good shape for the vigorous exercises.

Pre-professional Ballet I (7-11)

The classes offer complete series of barre exercises from plies, tendus, jetes, rond de jambe, fondus, frappes, petit battements, and developpes to grand battement. In order to strengthen and develop the proper muscles in the feet, legs and upper body, the exercises taught in this level will be more challenging and repetitive. Correspondingly, there will be more emphasis on slow adage exercises, petit allegro, medium jumps and pirouettes in 4th and 5th feet positions.

Beginning Ballet II (6-8)

The classes offer barre exercise including plies, battement tendus, battement jetes, rond de jambe, battement foudu, releves, battement frappes, petit battements, and grand battements. There will be more challenging ballet techniques taught in centre exercises. The classes will concentrate on a combination of proper body posture and position, building a strong foundation in the proper essential execution of movements as well as strengthening of foot work in pursuance of effortless future development to the subsequently dance program level.

Beginning Ballet I (6-8)

This class will include arm positions, barre exercises, such as plies, battement tendus, battement jetes, releves, grand battements and jumps. Students will learn fundamental center exercises as well. The classes particularly concentrate on fundamental classical ballet training with emphasis on body alignment and development of strong footwork.

Pre-ballet (3-5)

Our Preballet classes are superbly stimulating music and movement programs for boys and girls from 3 years to 5 years. Designed to encourage young students to enjoy the benefits and joys of music and dance. The classes offer an atmosphere of joy within discipline so the students can gain a sense of accomplishment as well as exploring their love of dance and music. Students will be introduced to the fundamental ballet positions of fingers, arms and feet. The class will also focus on coordination, musicality and stretching. Our goal is to inspire creativity, help student develop the essential understanding of musicality and movement skills, improve their motor skills, help them develop feelings of self-esteem and confidence, and develop good relationships with others.

Jazz Level I (6-8)

HIDA’s Jazz Level 1 class covers the basic American Jazz dance movements, hand, legs & arm coordination, turn preparation and execution, basic leaps and jumps, body isolation as well as choreographed dance.
